Yes, you read that right!
Japan has a famous festival called **Hadaka Matsuri** — also known as the “Naked Festival.”
But don’t worry… people are not running around completely naked like cartoon cavemen! 😂
Most participants wear a traditional Japanese cloth called a ***fundoshi* **(basically ancient underwear with extra confidence).
Thousands of Men… In Freezing Weather! 🥶
Now here comes the crazy part…
This festival usually happens in February, when it’s super cold in Japan. And thousands of men gather together wearing almost nothing!
Meanwhile, the rest of us complain when the AC is set to 22°C. 😅
Before the festival starts, many participants pour ice-cold water over themselves for purification.
Imagine voluntarily taking a freezing bath in winter. That’s superhero-level bravery!
The Lucky Touch Mission 🍀
One of the biggest versions of the festival happens in Okayama, where over 9,000 men rush together trying to grab sacred lucky sticks called shingi.
People believe these sticks bring good luck for the whole year.
Another version has a special “lucky man.” Everyone tries to touch him to pass their bad luck away.
Honestly, imagine being that guy:
“Bro, why is everyone touching me today?!” 😂
This Tradition Is SUPER Old ⏳
Some Hadaka Matsuri festivals are over 1,000 years old. They started as spiritual rituals to remove bad luck, pray for good harvests, and bring happiness for the year ahead.
So yes… underneath all the chaos, shouting, splashing, and near-naked running… there’s actually a deep cultural meaning.
Women Joined Recently 👏
For centuries, many of these festivals were only for men. But in 2024, women officially participated in one famous Hadaka Matsuri for the first time in history.
That means after 1,250 years, someone finally said: “Maybe women also deserve good luck?” 😄
Japan truly knows how to make festivals unforgettable!
