How to start reselling from absolutely nothing
Everyone says reselling is easy money. Nobody explains what to do when you have literally nothing to start with. If you’re broke and want to get into reselling on Vinted this is the guide I wish someone had given me 5–6 years ago.
Step 1: Find your starting budget at home
You need money to start, so let’s find it. Everyone has stuff they don’t use, don’t want. An old Nike t-shirt, a camera, PlayStation games. Other people want to buy this stuff.I promise you.
Go through your home, work out what you no longer need and sell it. To check what something’s worth, search for the same item on Vinted and look at recently sold listings that gives you a real market price, not a wishful one. List what you find, get rid of it and use that cash as your starting budget. I sold an old Nike jumper for a few cents, bought another branded jumper with that money and sold it for $20 profit. That’s literally how it began. You don’t need much just get yourself $10 to $20 to work with.
Step 2: Source your first stock
With $10–20 in your pocket, you have two places to look for stock: car boot sales and charity shops. Car boots are where the magic happens when you’re starting small. People go there to clear out stuff they don’t want, most items are priced at $1. You’re looking for branded pieces: Ralph Lauren, vintage Nike, vintage Adidas. Trading cards can be good too. While you’re there, check Vinted sold listings on your phone to verify value before you hand over any cash. Be nice, ask for their best price, be polite and try to negotiate a deal. One warning: there are fakes at car boots. Stick to people who look like they’re genuinely clearing out their home, not professional resellers. Charity shops work too, but they’ve got wise to branded clothing: you’ll sometimes see Ralph Lauren t-shirts priced at $30, which defeats the purpose.
Step 3: Start buying on Vinted
Now you’ve got a bit more cash and it’s time to start buying on Vinted to flip. Vinted is still full of deals despite being popular. Here’s the method: go to the search bar, type in a brand (Supreme, vintage Nike, Ralph Lauren, Gymshark are all solid starting points), set a price filter to your budget and switch the sort to Newly Listed. This shows items that fewer people including other resellers have seen yet. Then start making offers.
But the biggest cheat code on Vinted is the recommended For You page. Just like TikTok algorithm learns what you watch, Vinted’s algorithm learns what you buy and shows you relevant deals often at your exact price point. You don’t need to search for anything. Just scroll and Vinted will provide good deals.
The one problem with both methods (searching and scrolling) is that good deals disappear fast. Other resellers are hunting the same items and a freshly listed Supreme hoodie at $20 might be gone in minutes. If you’re not glued to your phone 24/7 you’ll miss things. That’s why I use VintedTrackerBot. This is a Telegram bot that monitors Vinted for you and sends new listings instantly. You set your brands, price range, keywordsand it does the watching. No more refreshing the app every five minutes. I get the deal sent straight to me and I just decide whether to buy. One rule: try to buy brands you actually care about. It’ll make the whole process easier and you’ll get better at spotting value faster.
Step 4: Take good photos
Photos are the single most important factor in making sales on Vinted. Good pictures sell items. Bad pictures don’t. You don’t need expensive gear. Natural light is fine. A clean carpet or floor works as a background. Flat lay the item it photographs better than hanging. Make sure it’s washed and crease-free first. When your pictures look professional, buyers trust you more.
Step 5: Write an honest listing
Vinted rewards honest sellers and penalises misleading ones. If the item has a small mark or any defect show it with a close-up photo and mention it in the description. Being upfront protects you from refund claims and disputes later.
Don’t spam tags with irrelevant brand names to game search results. Be genuine, be transparent and price competitively. You’re new, your page has no reviews yet the way you win buyers over is with great photos, fair pricing and honest listings.
When choosing shipping options, select as many carriers as possible. The more options a buyer has, the fewer reasons they have to abandon checkout.
Step 6: Post Quickly
Ship as fast as you can, same day if possible. Buyers who receive their order quickly are far more likely to leave a positive review and reviews matter enormously when you’re building a new page from scratch.
Step 7: Reinvest everything
You’ve made your first profit. Now put it straight back in. Get back on Vinted, keep scrolling the For You page, keep making offers. Keep going to car boot sales. This is exactly the cycle I ran five years ago: buy cheap, wait for it to arrive, sell for $10–15 more, repeat. It’s not glamorous in the beginning. But it compounds and once you set up something like VintedMonitorBot to ping you new deals automatically, you stop babysitting the app and start spending that time on photos, listings and actually shipping orders. Don’t spend your early profits. Reinvest. Be patient.
Step 8: Build an audience around what you’re already doing
Once you’ve got a few sales under your belt, start documenting your journey on social media. This isn’t about going viral , it’s about building a long-term asset that drives buyers directly to your shop.
Film yourself at car boot sales. Show the before and after of a piece you cleaned up and photographed. Post the flip: what you bought it for, what you sold it for. People are genuinely fascinated by this stuff, and reselling content performs well on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts because it combines the satisfaction of a good deal with real results.
The compounding effect here is powerful. Every follower who watches your content is a potential buyer. When you post a new listing, you’re not just waiting for someone to find it on Vinted because you have an audience you can point directly at it. Over time, that audience also builds trust in you as a seller, which means faster sales and fewer lowball offers.
Final thoughts
Be polite to buyers and sellers, work hard and focus on brands and categories you genuinely care about. Passion makes it easier to spot value, build knowledge and stay motivated.
This whole guide works because it’s exactly how I did it: dead broke student, $15 to my name and one old jumper. The model is simple. The execution just takes discipline
