What a Season of Competition Dance Classes in Macgregor Really Looks Like
Behind the eisteddfod medals: how kids go from a first class to a performance team — and what they pick up along the way.

People picture competition dance classes in Macgregor as the trophies — the medals, the podium, the big result at the end. Those are real, and this season they were lovely. But if you sat in the wings for a weekend, you’d see that the medals are almost the smallest part of it.
Our teams have just wrapped a season at the Ipswich Junior Eisteddfod, and it was a good one. Our 8’s took out the Age Aggregate — the overall age-group title — with first-place wins in jazz, tap and hip hop, and podium placings right through from our youngest dancers to our Opens. (For the record: these are whole-team results, never individual children, and we keep the language straight — a trophy is a win, a medal a placing.)
What a competition weekend actually feels like
It looks like early call times and shared nerves. It looks like a team huddle backstage, hair pinned, last-minute counts whispered. It looks like a group of kids who’ve rehearsed a number until it’s in their bones, walking on together, and — win or lose — walking off having backed themselves on a stage. The friendships that form in that backstage corridor are the kind that last.
How a child gets there: the pathway
This is the question I get most from parents, so let me be clear about it. No child is dropped straight into a competition team. Every dancer starts in a class — jazz, tap, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary — and builds their technique and confidence first. When they’re ready and keen, they audition for one of our performance teams. It’s an open, step-by-step pathway, not a closed club, and it’s there for any dancer who loves to perform.
Underneath the performance sits proper structure. Entertainment Unlimited Dance Centre has been on Brisbane’s southside since Sonya Llora founded it in 1988, and we’re a CSTD & RAD examination centre — so the training a child does on the way to a team is graded, qualified and built to last.
What they take home that isn’t a medal
Competitive dance is one of the better teachers of resilience I know. It asks a child to rehearse when it’s hard, to be reliable for the teammates counting on them, to handle a result graciously either way, and to find the nerve to perform under lights. Those are the things parents tell me they notice at home — a little more focus, a little more confidence, a lot more pride in something they earned.
