KIR LIBA MAN 1 Yogyakarta Hosts MUN FGD 2026 to Sharpen Global Diplomacy Skills

Yogyakarta, Indonesia — KIR LIBA MAN 1 Yogyakarta successfully organized the Model United Nations (MUN) Focus Group Discussion (FGD) 2026 on Saturday, May 30, 2026. The event served as a platform for young people to develop their public speaking, diplomacy, negotiation, and critical thinking skills through an interactive and educational simulation of a United Nations (UN) conference.
The program brought together both internal and external participants. Internal participants consisted of representatives from extracurricular organizations and student divisions within MAN 1 Yogyakarta, while external participants came from various schools across the Special Region of Yogyakarta, including SMAN 2 Yogyakarta, SMAN 6 Yogyakarta, MAN 2 Yogyakarta, and several other schools. The diverse participation created a dynamic discussion environment and expanded opportunities for students to exchange ideas and perspectives.
The event began with an Opening Ceremony featuring remarks from the KIR LIBA advisor, the President of KIR LIBA, and the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee. In their speeches, they highlighted the importance of discussion, argumentation, and understanding international issues as essential skills for young people facing global challenges.
“I hope this event becomes more than just an academic simulation. It should serve as a platform for intellectual development and increase participants’ global awareness of relevant international issues,” said the President of KIR LIBA MAN 1 Yogyakarta.
FGD MUN 2026 is one of KIR LIBA’s flagship programs, combining a UN simulation with a scientific and research-based approach to real-world issues. Participants were encouraged to conduct in-depth research, prepare position papers, and build arguments supported by data and relevant policies. Each delegation was also challenged to propose innovative and practical solutions to the issues being discussed.
This year’s committee was the United Nations General Assembly Third Committee (SOCHUM), which focuses on social, humanitarian, and human rights issues. Carrying the theme “Safeguarding Human Rights in the Fight Against Terrorism” and the motion “Balancing National Security and Human Rights in Counterterrorism Efforts,” delegates explored the challenges of maintaining national security while protecting fundamental human rights in counterterrorism policies.
Through the forum, participants were encouraged to understand the complexity of global issues and formulate solutions grounded in humanitarian values and justice.
Following the Opening Ceremony, the program continued with four committee sessions. During these sessions, delegates presented their countries’ positions, defended their arguments based on existing policies, and negotiated with other delegates to formulate collaborative solutions. The discussions ultimately resulted in draft resolutions reflecting the participants’ collective efforts to address the topic at hand.

The Principal of MAN 1 Yogyakarta, Edi Triyanto, S.Ag., S.Pd., M.Pd., expressed appreciation for the successful implementation of FGD MUN 2026.
“Activities such as Model United Nations are very important in shaping young people with broad perspectives, critical thinking abilities, and strong communication and collaboration skills. Through forums like this, participants learn to understand different viewpoints, present ideas persuasively, and seek solutions to global challenges while upholding humanitarian values. I hope this experience strengthens their confidence, global awareness, and commitment to continuous learning and contribution to society, the nation, and the international community,” he said.
After all committee sessions concluded, the event proceeded with an awards ceremony recognizing participants who demonstrated outstanding performance throughout the simulation. The awards were presented to delegates who excelled in argumentation, diplomacy, collaboration, and active participation during the forum.
The program ended with a Closing Ceremony, marking the conclusion of the KIR LIBA MAN 1 Yogyakarta MUN FGD 2026.
Through this event, KIR LIBA MAN 1 Yogyakarta hopes to continue providing a platform for students to strengthen their critical thinking, communication skills, and awareness of global issues facing the international community today. (hly)
