What I Have Learned So Far in My Cybersecurity Journey

As I continue learning cybersecurity, I have realized that ethical hacking is not just about attacking systems or finding vulnerabilities. A large part of it involves gathering information, understanding how systems work, and thinking like both a defender and an attacker.

One of the first topics I learned was Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) and passive reconnaissance. OSINT involves collecting information from publicly available sources, while passive reconnaissance is gathering information about a target without directly interacting with it. I like to compare passive reconnaissance to using binoculars to observe something from a distance rather than walking up to it. This approach allows security professionals to gather useful information while remaining undetected.

During my training, I worked with tools such as Wigle.net and ExifTool. Wigle.net helped me understand how wireless network information can be collected and mapped. ExifTool taught me how metadata can be extracted from files such as images and documents. I was surprised to discover how much information can be hidden inside files and how valuable that information can be during an investigation.

Another important part of my learning has been working with virtual machines. Virtual machines provide safe environments where I can practice cybersecurity skills without affecting real systems. I have worked with machines such as DevGuru, Metasploitable, and Kioptrix, which are intentionally designed for learning ethical hacking techniques. These labs have helped me gain practical experience and better understand vulnerabilities, system enumeration, and security concepts.

I also learned how to connect to and interact with these virtual machines using command-line tools. This helped me improve my understanding of networking, IP addresses, and system communication. Using the command line has made me more comfortable navigating systems and solving technical problems.

In addition, I learned about FoxyProxy and its role in managing browser proxy settings. This gave me insight into privacy, traffic routing, and how security professionals can control and monitor web traffic more effectively.

Overall, these experiences have shown me that cybersecurity is much more than hacking. It involves research, investigation, problem-solving, and continuous learning. Every new concept I learn helps me better understand how attackers operate and how organizations can defend themselves against threats.

I am excited to continue building my knowledge and skills in cybersecurity, and I look forward to learning more about penetration testing, digital forensics, network security, and other areas of ethical hacking.
