The Science Behind Project Hail Mary

When I watched this movie, I thought it was great, but if you look closely, you can find some interesting scientific references.

Definition of a Hail Mary (the one we will be focusing on): In the project Hail Mary, the main character, Grace, is sent on a mission to a dying Sun, with a low probability that all of Earth will survive. This is a definition of a Hail Mary. A common term in sports is a final shot, trying to get a touchdown. One could use this analogy to refer to a low-probability, high-risk final “shot” to save the “game,” in this case, Earth

The Adrian Manuver: The Biggest Long Shot of the Movie

In the movie, the Adrian maneuver has a high risk and high reward. To put it into an analogy, you have 2 sumo wrestlers. One of the sumo wrestlers is less strong than the other. The other Sumo wrestler is pushing back just enough so that it doesn't get out of the ring immediately. The other sumo wrestler is stalling for his friend, who will replace him during the match. He just has to hold for enough time so that his friend can come in and save the day.

Sounds easy enough, right? What if 3 or four sumo wrestlers are trying to push you off the ring from all sides, and you are wearing a semi-transparent blindfold?

That is the Adrian maneuver. You have almost all sides blocked, and you have to go at a specific angle and get there at a specific time.

The alien Rocky wasn't able to control the ship for two reasons.

  • He didn’t know human technology as well as grace
  • If he did know human technology as well as Grace, and he tried to pull the spaceship out, it would make it so that he would be hit with immense g-force from both sides

So the standby was the only option.

There was another option of going into an elliptical orbit, but it would waste immense amounts of fuel because if they did, Grace wouldn't be able to collect the data and send it back to Earth. He would also need to be at way higher altitudes than needed.

Astrophage: The Solar Powered Microorganism

In the movie, there is a special type of astromicrobiological organism that feasts on stars' energy to survive and breed. Even though it is the antagonist of the story, it is still amazing to see how much thought the author of the book put into making the idea of the Astrophage.

The astrophage is a single-celled microorganism that is powered by the sun. It works like a plant cell (without the rigid wall), which absorbs a little of the sun's radiation. Like plant cells, it gets its energy from the sun, but unlike plant cells, they use their behavior to turn itself opaque so that it can capture all of the radiation from where they are getting it. In the movie, they are attracted to infrared light so that they can reproduce. To get all the energy, they use multiple cellular structures:

  • A photon-absorbing membrane
  • A storage organelle (like a vacuole), but it stores light
  • A directional energy release thruster: It expels energy from itself to move
  • self-copying genetic system to reproduce quickly
  • It must have a heat-resistant layer to protect itself from the star's heat
  • A vacuum survival structure to shield proteins from radiation
  • And finally, similar structures to Earth for obvious reasons

To really understand the amazing biology of astrophage, you have to look into it deeply. I’d say research

Rocky Our Beloved Alien

Rocky is one of the major elements of Project Hail Mary, a story packed with scientific ideas woven into its worldbuilding. At first, he seems like a straightforward alien engineer, but every part of his existence depends on precise adaptations to his home planet, Erid. Erid is a high-pressure, ammonia-rich environment, completely unlike Earth, where survival requires fundamentally different biology and structure.

Rocky’s entire body is designed to survive being crushed under extreme atmospheric pressure. Instead of soft, flexible tissue like humans, he has a solid structural shell that acts like a biological frame, holding everything together when the external environment would normally collapse living systems. His internal pressure is balanced with the outside world, so what would flatten a human does not affect him.

His chemistry is just as alien. Earth life depends on water as a universal solvent, but Rocky’s biology runs on ammonia. This allows his cells and biochemical reactions to function normally in conditions that would be lethal to humans. What is toxic or impossible for Earth life is simply “normal” for him.

He also experiences the world differently, relying on non-visual sensing rather than sight. Overall, Rocky is not just an alien character, but a carefully designed example of how life could evolve under completely different physical rules.

Key adaptations:

  • Ammonia-based biology instead of water-based life
  • Pressure-balanced body system to survive extreme atmospheric force
  • Rigid shell structure acting as both armor and skeleton
  • Vibration-based perception instead of vision-based sensing
