The Art of Waste – Relearning Time Beyond Efficiency

In a world obsessed with optimization, the word “waste” has become taboo. Every minute must be productive, every effort measurable. Yet, art, tea, wine – the most human of practices – resist such logic. They are rituals of inefficiency, demanding time, patience, and presence.

Nothing is gained quickly; everything unfolds slowly. When one prepares tea, there is no algorithm to follow, only rhythm. The sound of water, the warmth of the bowl, the silence between gestures – they are not steps toward an outcome, but the outcome itself. Likewise, a winemaker waits for the right moment, knowing that nature’s pace cannot be forced. In both, the act is not about producing value but rediscovering the meaning of waiting.

Digital society has taught us to fear stillness. To scroll is to exist; to pause is to disappear. But perhaps it is precisely in that “wasteful” pause – the moment when nothing happens – that we encounter what is most human. To waste time consciously is not negligence. It is the cultivation of sensitivity.

If the previous age sought efficiency as salvation, the next may seek inefficiency as wisdom. We will not stop technology’s march, but we can reintroduce intervals – spaces for slowness – within it. Art is not against progress. It merely reminds us that not all progress is movement. To relearn time beyond efficiency is to remember how to be alive.

無駄の技法 ─ 効率を超えて時間を学び直す

最適化がすべてを支配する社会では、「無駄」という言葉は忌避される。だが、茶の湯、ワイン、アート―それらは「非効率」の儀式である。

目的ではなく過程そのものが価値を持つ世界。茶を点てる行為にはアルゴリズムがない。湯の音、茶碗のぬくもり、間の静けさ。それらは結果へ至る手順ではなく、結果そのものである。ワイン造りもまた同じ。自然のリズムに寄り添い、待つこと自体が創造の一部である。

こうした「待つ」という時間の中に、人間は感覚を取り戻す。スクロールし続けなければ存在できないような現代において、「何もしない」時間は浪費ではなく、感受性の修練である。

次の時代がもし効率ではなく「非効率の知恵」を求めるなら、その原点はアートや茶の湯にある。技術の進歩を止める必要はない。ただ、進歩の合間に“間”を戻せばいい。効率を超えて時間を学び直すこと― それは、人間として生きる感覚を取り戻すことだ。
