What Cultural Norm Most Deserves to Evolve?
Evolving in emotions and as a specie
I’m born and raised in Sweden. Traveling to most continents in the world I see that every culture carries invisible rules, unspoken expectations about how we should feel, speak, behave, or belong. Some of these norms help us stay connected. Others can keep us small.
One norm, present across families, workplaces, and even nations, is so common that we hardly notice it anymore:
We have a norm of not talking about what hurts.
We avoid discomfort because it seems polite. We stay silent because we don’t want to disturb the peace. We pretend we’re fine because honesty feels risky.
I have spent over 160 days in meditation retreats, learning to sit with discomfort rather than escape it. In silence, I discovered that emotions do not disappear when we avoid them; they simply grow denser and more compact.
Then, through my work being a representative at over 1,500 funerals across all five major religions, I seen another truth:
People regret what they didn’t say far more than what they did.
Silence may feel safe… Numbness… nothing happens… but it rarely creates healing. It prevents clarity, blocks emotional digestion, and keeps families, communities, and even societies from maturing.
Emotional Avoidance
Across cultures, it often shows up as:
- “Don’t bring it up.”
- “Don’t make a scene.”
- “Don’t talk about grief.”
- “Don’t set boundaries, it’s uncomfortable.”
- “Don’t express anger unless it’s hidden in a joke.”
- “Don’t question power.”
The intention is harmony, but the effect is emotional stagnation. Avoidance is not maturity. Avoidance is fear dressed as politeness. And this fear, this cultural reflex to sidestep the real conversation, is one of the greatest obstacles to human development.
And I understand this fear. Because we are not trained in expressing maturely.
Istima: The Learning Inside the Storm
What I discovered is we need to have a word for a positive approach for these challenges. In my work, I call this process istima! It is the maturation that happens through hardship, not around it.
- When we are ill or physically depleted
- When grief knocks the air out of our lungs
- When relationships strain
- When workplaces become emotionally heavy
- When societies polarize
- When global pressures test our collective resilience
These moments aren’t indicators that we are failing. They are invitations to grow. But growth only happens when we face the storm with curiosity, not silence.
Istima is the opposite of avoidance, but it is not seeking conflict, it is to be brave and strive to be mature, when things are difficult…
Istima is the courage to learn inside the discomfort, personally, interpersonally, and collectively.
Why This Norm Matters Now
We are living in a time of heightened pressure: polarization, loneliness, environmental stress, digital overwhelm, and emotional burnout.
The old norm of “don’t talk about it” simply can’t carry the weight of the world we now inhabit… If we continue avoiding our discomfort:
- We do not mature in our emotion development.
- Families won’t heal.
- Communities won’t trust.
- Leaders won’t grow.
- Societies won’t mature…
Silence cannot guide us into the future. But emotional clarity can.
A New Norm: Dignified Honesty
The cultural norm that deserves to evolve is not simply communication, it’s the way we approach emotional truth. Imagine a society where:
- Difficult emotions are not shameful.
- Boundaries are clarity, not conflict.
- Saying “I’m struggling” is strength, not weakness.
- Apology is restoration, not humiliation.
- Power is used with responsibility, not dominance.
- Learning through hardship is respected, not hidden.
This shift is not about drama. It is about dignity. Real maturity is not avoiding storms, it is learning within the storm. This is true for individuals, relationships, communities, and nations.
A Global Invitation
Every generation inherits cultural norms, and we also carry the responsibility to evolve them. Perhaps the norm we need most to outgrow is the one that has kept us quiet for too long, the norm that confuses politeness with wisdom, and silence with peace.
Peace is not revolution, but evolution.
Not talking hasn’t protected us. Learning together and evolving will help us to mature. All of us are carry a piece of this evolution.
This is why I talk about The Human Constitution, that we have both rights and responsibilities. The seven principles, I have divided in the three levels of human maturity principles of our human rights and human responsibilities
Personal Maturity (1–3): We each have the right to our own body, emotions, and thoughts… and we have the responsibility to care for our health, mature through our feelings, and think with clarity. Through istima in illness, dense emotions, or confusion, we learn to listen to ourselves and grow from within.
Interpersonal Maturity (4–6): In relationships, we hold the right to our power, our voice, and our way of life… balanced by the responsibility to act with integrity, communicate with respect, and honor the lives and choices of others. Here, istima teaches us boundaries, listening, cooperation, and compassion.
Global Maturity (7): As part of humanity, we share the right to shape our collective future, and the responsibility to evolve together with moral courage. Collective istima reminds us that collaboration is our greatest strength.
So I invite you to reflect:
What silent rule in your life, family, or culture is ready to mature? And who might you become if you replaced avoidance with dignified honesty?
