Micromanagement, the subtle art of exerting control over others to ensure tasks are done exactly as desired, is a familiar experience for many. It can be likened to a chef meticulously overseeing every ingredient and cooking process, stifling the creativity and independence of their sous chefs.

Excessive interference inevitably leads to issues. Just like with anything else, an excess of micromanagement disrupts our peace.

All of us possess maps of the world we live in, but when someone hands us a map with predetermined alleys and roads, our creativity becomes constrained. This leads to frustration, stress, and a sense of paralysis.

To escape the suffocating grip of micromanagement, a shift in focus is necessary. We need to cultivate a secret understanding of the other person’s perspective within ourselves.

In my own experience, my mother has been a micromanager. In the past, I displayed negative emotions towards her and said exaggerated things to hurt her feelings. I did not appreciate her controlling and demanding attitude towards me. It seemed that whatever I did was not okay with her. She always had an alternate plan in mind, and it was her way or the highway. So I decided to shift my focus from the “What” to the “Why.”

Rather than succumbing to frustration and anger again, I took an observational approach. I discovered that my grandmother, my mother’s mom, also exhibited micromanaging tendencies. This realization made me understand that many of us operate on default programming, which can be challenging for anyone to break free from.

Empathy is synonymous with compassion and serves as the catalyst to break free from the clutches of micromanagement, even without the person realizing it. Empathy holds the power to dismantle the illusion of micromanagement by revealing the “why” behind the “what.” Understanding breeds freedom, making it easier to determine the appropriate course of action once you grasp the underlying reasons behind a situation.

Dear reader, some things will always lie beyond your control, while others can be managed. Identify these aspects of control and master the process by constantly questioning what lies within and outside of your control. Exercise empathy for all aspects that lie within your control, including how you react to events.

To liberate yourself from micromanagement, approach it with the same empathy you extend to a sick friend with a high fever. Direct that empathy inward and stop trying to change or mold the other person. Shift your perspective through the power of empathy.

From an external viewpoint, a shift in attitude, whether it be a subtle understanding or assertiveness with respect, can work wonders.

As I advocate for finding the right balance of control, remember: “Embrace the Balance: Sanity lies not in complete immersion nor total detachment; true wisdom lies in navigating the realms of inner and outer worlds with understanding.” — Syed.
