Still Waiting for Epstein News

Surprise. The now legal requirement for the Trump administration to make available the full expanse of Jeffrey Epstein files passed yesterday with only partial compliance, a move that drew immediate political response for, well, unresponsiveness.

Still, that partial compliance — maybe 10 percent per one estimate — weighed in with thousands of documents, presented in clusters of court or Justice Department records made available on a Justice Department website with a search box function.

Good luck, using a tiny teaspoon requiring specific proper names to examine an ocean is hardly the easiest way to effectively find the most critical information.

At first glance, much of what was released were court documents and internal memos in support of legal arguments — not the supposedly spellbinding tale of rich men who sexually assaulted very young girls. Much appeared to reflect the three known and limited investigations into Epstein’s interactions with young women.

For much of the day, a search for “Donald Trump” turned up nothing. Later it showed several court documents in which his name was mentioned. There are lists of pages redacted, including interviews with surviving women. There are photos of famous men around Epstein without context, with several of Bill Clinton, likely for political embarrassment, though none showing sexual abuse. At least so far.

Even a surviving victim seeking information on how her own complaints were handled will likely have a hard time finding a reference in redacted material.

Any expectation that this is a simplified way to find documents showing the names of bad actors will only spur disappointment. We’ll await review of the released information by those sufficiently steeped in the details of the years-old probes to make any intelligible discoveries. We know what we knew all along: Jeffrey Epstein paid teenage girls to perform sex acts, used his onetime girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell to recruit and manage his victims, and invited bigwigs with whom Epstein wanted to pal around to join him in multiple locations.

Overwhelmed, Underprepared or Resistant?

The Justice Department, which has had years to review the files and since January to make good on this administration’s promises to prepare for release, insists it needs more time to vet names of 1,200 victims and black out addresses or to ensure that nothing affecting any continuing or new cases are included.

Whether the task has proved overwhelming or the Justice Department is hiding information that may prove embarrassing or criminally liable for various individuals is not clear. It sure feels as if Justice officials were including tremendous amounts of useless information while holding back on what anyone wants to find to resolve whether rich men skated on criminal charges.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky, said without names of those abusers, the exercise was a failure.

Lots of pages, images and interviews are blacked out, raising questions about what constitutes compliance with the law passed by Congress and signed by Trump.

Not a surprise: No one got arrested yesterday or even much embarrassed by the presumably now illegal delay in the holdup of the file release. Rep, Ro Khanna, D-Calif., said if the rest is not forthcoming, he and his partners in Congress would seek impeachment charges against Attorney General Pam Bondi and deputy Todd Blanche. But don’t hold your breath for that outcome either.

More importantly, what survivors of Epstein’s rape campaign wanted was justice unleashed against those rich men who abused them. There is little evidence that such action would follow release of any of these documents.

What there never will be in these files are reasons about why state and federal government prosecutors agreed to limitations on the scope of various investigations of Epstein over the years.

The big buildup feels like a bust.
