Music a way to reach the art of freedom: Faisal’s story of resilience and passion

For Faisal, a young Afghan artist, this sentiment has been the guiding force behind his journey to become a pianist and share the gift of music with his community. Faisal’s love affair with music began in his childhood, where he sought mental and physical peace and a feeling of love. A serendipitous encounter with a lady playing an old Afghan song on the piano deeply moved him, igniting a desire within to one day master the instrument and become an artist in his own right. Determined to pursue his dream, Faisal began his musical journey at the age of 12 under the guidance of his keyboard teacher, Mr. Haroon Halimi.

Over the course of four years, Faisal honed his skills, and by the age of 16, he graced the stage for the first time, delivering a mesmerizing performance with a local music group. His talent did not go unnoticed, and soon he found himself collaborating with various music bands, performing at events such as concerts, weddings, and birthdays, captivating audiences and touching hearts with his soul-stirring melodies.

Despite the challenges that life presented, Faisal’s family always supported his artistic aspirations. Growing up in a family with a deep appreciation for music, they recognized the power it held to bring joy, healing, and unity to their community. Faisal’s parents, who were denied educational opportunities due to the ravages of war in Afghanistan, were determined to provide him with an education, enabling him to finish school successfully.

However, with the recent fall of Afghanistan, Faisal’s world was turned upside down. Tragically, the new government’s restrictions threatened his passion and artistic expression. Playing the piano, which had once been a symbol of freedom and love, now posed a risk to his life. Faisal’s heartbreak was compounded by witnessing his sister’s dreams of education being shattered due to the chaos and uncertainty that followed.

“Music brings freedom, peace, and love between people, countries, and the world,” says Faisal, who believes that art has the power to transcend barriers and connect humanity. His dream of serving his community through music now faces unprecedented challenges, but Faisal remains steadfast in his determination to see Afghanistan flourish as a place where artists can express themselves without fear or restriction.

Today, as Afghanistan remains gripped by silence, Faisal’s resilient spirit yearns for the day when the sound of peace and love will resonate once again.
