Why We Gen Z Are Lonely, But Still Pretending 💔🙂
Let’s be real for a second.
Why We Gen Z Are Lonely, But Still Pretending 💔🙂
Let’s be real for a second.
We’re the generation that’s always talking:
- Snap streaks ✅
- Discord calls ✅
- Group chats that never sleep ✅
- Online friends in 4 different time zones ✅
And yet…
Most of us feel like we’re going through life alone. And we don’t say it out loud because… who do we even say it to?
1. We didn’t really learn “emotional safety” growing up 🧊
Nothing dramatic, nothing movie-level trauma. Just subtle patterns like:
- When we were upset, people said “you’re overthinking”
- We were told “you’ll be fine, stop crying”
- Or the adults around us were too busy, stressed, or tired to really sit with us
So our brain quietly learned:
“My feelings are my job. Don’t rely on others emotionally.”
Not because anyone was evil. Just because emotional support wasn’t consistent.
2. So now we’re too independent 💪 (…but tired)
We didn’t mean to become:
- “I’ll handle it”
- “I don’t want to bother anyone”
- low-maintenance friend
But we did.
And now:
- We don’t ask for help
- We try to fix everything alone
- We cry silently at night then show up like “lol what’s up” the next day 😄
It’s not strength. It’s self-protection that just stayed.
3. Getting close to people feels like a risk we don’t know how to take 🫤
Someone tries to get emotionally close and our brain goes:
- “Relax dude…”
- “Why are you being so deep?”
- “I’m fine, really.”
Not because we don’t want closeness.
But because closeness = dependence And dependence = someone might fail you
So we stay guarded.
Safe, but alone-sorta-alone.
4. So our friendships stay fun, but shallow 😅
We joke. We gossip. We talk about shows, music, random life chaos.
But we rarely talk about:
- fear
- heartbreak
- anxiety
- emptiness
Not because we don’t feel those things. But because we don’t trust people to handle them gently.
So we keep everything on the surface like:
“haha i’m fine fr no worries”
While our chest is carrying a whole emotional gym.
5. And yeah… we pretend. 😐👉🙂
We know how to look:
- chill
- stable
- unbothered
- “I don’t really care tho”
Even when we do care. A lot.
Pretending is easier than:
- being misunderstood
- being ignored
- being “too much”
- or being left on seen after opening up
So we fake okay. And no one notices.
So the real answer?
We’re not lonely because we lack people.
We’re lonely because:
we never learned how to let people in without losing ourselves.
And that takes skills. Actual skills. Ones most of us were never taught.
This is Part One — understanding the problem.
Next is Part Two, where we talk about how to build real emotional connection slowly and safely — without oversharing and without letting the wrong people in.
Before I write Part Two:
Which vibe should the solution have?
A) Calm & comforting 🤍 B) Best-friend real talk 💬 C) Strategic, step-by-step ✅
Reply: A, B, or C.
