Darjeeling or Gorkhaland: A Question of Identity and Representation

This argument isn’t just about what a future state should be called, or whether it should be Darjeeling or Gorkhaland. Each name has its own importance and is loaded with its own history and symbolism. For instance, Darjeeling is known as the ‘Queen of the Hills’ and is known all across the world to have great tea, a charming toy train, and amazing views. On the other hand, Gorkhaland represents the political dream of millions of Gorkhas residing in India, which is connected with the hopes of identity, dignity, and belonging.

As a young person from Darjeeling, I have often contemplated why the demand has to be for a state called Gorkhaland. Taking the cognitive liberty of Gorkhaland, the ‘-land’ suffix, at least superficially, seems to pertain to a demand for a country as opposed to a state. I, however, believe the name Darjeeling would be more beneficial than the name of a state.

I’m not claiming to be an expert politician and certainly not looking to join any party. I speak as the son of an esteemed retired Indian Army officer. I, like many other Gorkha families and Gorkhas, have had a father, brother, and even many relatives making tremendous sacrifices for India. Even with all this, it’s hard to overlook the fact that, for some painful reasons, we are regarded as ‘foreigners’ in the soil that we are defending.

From a marketing point of view, I see a strong advantage for Darjeeling. As a marketer, I see Darjeeling as a globally recognised brand. Its brand associations with tea and tourism suggest that little marketing effort will be needed. On the other hand, the Gorkhaland brand would be relatively unknown and would need decades of promotion and branding. Would it not be wiser to maintain the brand value of Darjeeling and still state that we are Gorkhas?

Still, in talking to a local leader, I was reminded that the concern went deeper than marketing. He insisted that Gorkhaland is not just a name, it is a vision for self-determination and hope. It is for a future where dignity will never be an issue and where people of all castes, creeds and walks of life are accepted without discrimination. From his perspective, it is a seed to be harvested for future generations, and it is based on the sacrifices, languages and culture of the Gorkhas in India. Gorkhaland, from this perspective, is not just a brand, it is a significant part of history.

In this conversation, I was made aware that the dispute pertains to more than simply which name “sounds better”. When compared to Gorkhaland, Darjeeling implies more global visibility, familiarity, and even more prestige. Gorkhaland, on the other hand, captures the struggles of an identity and justice of more than a hundred years. What I think is the most difficult is bridging the gap between the recognition that is practical and the recognition that is a symbol of empowerment.

I admit I do not have the full perspective, and I do understand that my reasoning is, in fact, lacking. The question is: is it the state in our aspirations that we wish to consider? Is it Darjeeling, a name that is almost ingrained in the minds of the world, or is it Gorkhaland, a title that carries a rich past and a bright future? I think that the real answer in this case is not simply the name, but rather the name that assures dignity and a sense of belonging to its people.

I apologise if I missed any important details when writing this, however, I intend to make amends or add additional information in the future if needed.

But for this moment now, what are your views on Gorkhaland or Darjeeling?
