Some years leave a mark. Years that are harsh, dry, or riddled with disease.
In those times, a tree does not stop growing — it just grows differently. It produces rings that are dark, narrow, and incredibly compressed. They aren’t pretty, not wide, but they are dense.
They are the hardest part of the wood.
That specific density holds the structure together when storms come.
I look back at my 48th year. Diagnosis arrived in May; surgery followed in June. By July, complications set in, turning weeks into a blur of survival.
It was a dark ring in my timeline — small, tight, and hard.
I am still standing. The storm hasn’t broken me; those dark years are what hold me upright.
