When Did Cleansing Become a Two-Step Process?

There was a time when cleansing was simple.

You picked up a cleanser, washed your face, and moved on with your day.

That was it.

Today, many routines look very different.

Cleansing oils.

Cleansing balms.

Micellar water.

Foam cleansers.

Sometimes all in the same evening.

This raises an interesting question:

When did washing your face become a two-step process?

From my observation, the answer may have less to do with cleansing itself and more to do with what people started putting on their skin.

As sunscreens became more durable and long-wearing makeup became more common, consumers began asking a new question:

“Is one cleanse enough?”

That question changed everything.

Double cleansing gradually moved from being a technique used by beauty enthusiasts to something much closer to a mainstream habit.

What’s fascinating is how quickly it became normalized.

Today, many people feel uncomfortable skipping it.

Even if they can’t see any residue, they worry that something might still be left behind.

And perhaps that’s the key.

Double cleansing isn’t only about removing products.

It’s also about removing uncertainty.

Consumers can’t easily see sunscreen residue.

They can’t easily measure cleansing effectiveness.

So they seek reassurance.

Another step often provides that reassurance.

But this leads to another interesting question.

Does everyone actually need two cleansing steps?

The answer may be more complicated than social media often suggests.

Different sunscreens behave differently.

Different skin types have different needs.

Different lifestyles create different cleansing requirements.

Yet skincare culture often prefers simple rules.

Skin rarely does.

In the next article, I’ll explore one of the biggest assumptions in modern skincare:

Are sunscreens really as difficult to remove as many people believe?
