How mainstream history erased Mewar’s most successful military campaign between Haldighati and Dewair. An analysis backed by primary sources.
In standard history textbooks, the military career of Maharana Pratap is often presented with a massive chronological leap — jumping straight from the Battle of Haldighati (June 1576) to the Battle of Dewair (October 1582). The intervening five years are frequently painted with a brush of helplessness, suggesting that the Maharana was reduced to a wandering fugitive in the Aravallis, surviving on ‘grass bread’.
However, when we closely examine the contemporary archival records (Primary Sources), a radically aggressive reality emerges. The Battle of Mohi (September 1577), fought just a year after Haldighati, proves that Maharana Pratap was a calculating military mastermind who systematically dismantled the Mughal outpost network in Mewar.
1. The Strategic Prelude: Akbar’s Economic Blockade (1576–1577)
Following the heavy standoff at Haldighati, Emperor Akbar himself marched into Mewar in October 1576 with a colossal army. When months of active chasing yielded no results, Akbar resorted to a strategy of total economic and geographical strangulation.
The Mughal army established heavily fortified military outposts (called Thanas) at every crucial junction connecting the fertile plains of Mewar to the rugged Aravalli hills.
- The Geopolitical Value of Mohi: Located near modern-day Rajsamand (Kankroli), Mohi was the largest and most critical Mughal garrison in the region. Situated at the crossroads of Chittorgarh, Udaipur, and Kumbhalgarh, it functioned as the nerve center for the imperial supply lines.
- The Imperial Command: Akbar deployed some of his most battle-hardened elite generals at Mohi, including Ghazi Khan Badakhshi, Sharif Khan Atga, and Mujahid Beg.

2. Primary Persian Sources: The Enemy Confesses the Terror
The ultimate proof of Maharana Pratap’s crippling siege at Mohi comes from the court chroniclers of the Mughal Empire itself:
A. Muntakhab-ut-Tawarikh (By Abdul Qadir Badauni)
Badauni, who was physically present in the Mewar campaigns with the imperial forces, gives a harrowing eyewitness account of the Mughal condition at Mohi in Volume 2:
“Rana Pratap launched devastating, well-coordinated raids from the mountains, completely severing the imperial supply chains. The Mughal Amirs (commanders) stationed at Mohi and adjacent outposts were effectively imprisoned within their own fortifications. The terror of the Rana’s guerillas was so absolute that the imperial troops lacked the courage to even open the gates to let their horses forage or fetch basic provisions.”
B. Akbarnama (By Abul Fazl)
Abul Fazl, the chief court historian, was notorious for masking imperial defeats. However, writing in Volume 3 of Akbarnama (covering the 22nd regnal year of Akbar, late 1577 CE), he notes:
“The imperial officers stationed in Mewar became indolent and negligent due to the increasing pressure and unceasing attacks of the Rana, failing to defend their positions properly. The situation degenerated to such a degree that the Emperor was forced to recall the commanders of Mohi, Udaipur, and other outposts.”
‘Indolence’ or ‘laziness’ was merely a face-saving diplomatic cover-up for a devastating military siege. In truth, Maharana Pratap had completely starved them into a forced retreat.
3. Cross-Referencing Indigenous and Sanskrit Epigraphs
The internal archives of Mewar, royal Sanskrit mahakavyas, and old state ledgers corroborate that Mohi was not a mere hit-and-run skirmish, but a brutal pitched battle.
- Amarkavyam & Rajprashasti Mahakavyam (By Ranchhod Bhatt): These texts explicitly record that the Maharana descended from the hills like a thunderbolt, striking down the outposts of the Yavanas (Mughals) and liberating Mohi through fierce swordsmanship.
- Veer Vinod (By Kaviraj Shyamaldas): The most authoritative documentation of Mewari history (Vol 2, pp. 154–156), records:
- “In the middle of Vikram Samvat 1634 (1577 CE), Maharana Pratap launched an attack on the Mughal garrison at Mohi. A fierce battle took place against the army of Ghazi Khan Badakhshi. The imperial forces shattered under the Rajput onslaught. Ghazi Khan was either slain or severely wounded as his remaining troops fled, and the Maharana successfully reclaimed Mohi.”
4. Battle Tactics: Turning Attrition into Annihilation
The liberation of Mohi was a multi-phased tactical masterclass executed by Maharana Pratap:
- Dismantling the Supply Chain: Pratap deployed local Bhil archers and Rajput cavalries around the perimeter of Mohi, intercepting every single grain or ammunition convoy arriving from Ajmer or Malwa.
- Forcing the Enemy Out: As internal provisions within the fort depleted to absolute zero, starvation forced Ghazi Khan Badakhshi to abandon his secure stone walls and march out into the open field to fight.
- The Final Strike: On the plains of Mohi, the Maharana’s core army — led by elite warriors like Rawat Krishnadas Chundawat and the remnants of Ramshah Tanwar’s family — surrounded the emaciated Mughal garrison, leading to the total annihilation of Ghazi Khan’s division.
5. The Geopolitical Consequence of Mohi
- Shattering the Narrative of Weakness: It completely demolishes the textbook myth that post-Haldighati Mewar was defeated. It proves that within twelve months of Haldighati, Pratap retained enough offensive capabilities to crush Akbar’s premier military hub.
- The Real Trigger for Shahbaz Khan’s Invasion: When the news of the massacre at Mohi reached Akbar in October 1577, he was furious. Realizing his outpost strategy had utterly collapsed, Akbar immediately dispatched his most ruthless general, Shahbaz Khan, with a massive imperial army to Mewar.

(Economic Blockade)
(Indigenous Cross-References)
