June Brings a Tropical Feel to Caribbean-American Heritage Month

June ushers in the tropical warmth of summer, which makes it the perfect place for National Caribbean-American Month! This celebration takes place all June long in order to honor America’s rich and diverse Caribbean-American community, who have made immense contributions to art, science, culture, medicine, and more across the centuries.

These contributions were first formally celebrated by the Institute of Caribbean Studies in 2000, and they were officially submitted to be honored in June in 2004, through a legislative bill passed by Congresswoman Barbara Lee. President George W. Bush signed the proclamation to make June National Caribbean-American Month in 2006, and it has been celebrated ever since — now, for nearly two decades.

It’s a fun and timely opportunity to seek out the works, creations, and knowledge of those of Caribbean descent — from the delicious island-inspired cuisine, to the breezy music, the vibrant fashion, and majestic art and architecture. Join us as we celebrate our staff, students, and all of Caribbean-American heritage!
