Some genealogical discoveries arrive quietly, a name confirming a suspicion, a date filling a gap. Others arrive like the sudden recognition of a face you have seen before in a different context — the moment when two threads you believed to be separate reveal themselves as the same thread, approached from opposite ends. The research into my mother’s ancestry produced exactly such a moment. And then, almost immediately, it produced another.

This is the story of how a search that began with a single mitochondrial haplogroup on a Greek island became the discovery that both sides of a family tree — the maternal line and the paternal line of my mother, traced independently, through different genealogical pathways across different countries and centuries — lead back to the same family, on the same island, in the same era. And how that family, the Mavrokordatos of Chios, turns out to be connected not to one but to two Byzantine imperial dynasties, and to the most powerful Genoese family in the eastern Aegean. And how a Prussian-noble grandfather named Baron Alexis von Prittwitz carries, through his own two separate parental lines, both of those Byzantine imperial connections independently.

The island is Chios. It is always Chios.

The Starting Point: A Haplogroup and an Island

The research began with mtDNA haplogroup K1a4j1, identified in my mother’s maternal line. K1a4j1 is a rare and precisely defined subclade with deep roots in the ancient Near East and strong associations with Anatolian, Mediterranean, and early Jewish populations — the world of the eastern Aegean and the Levantine coast. The task was to find where, in the historical record, this haplogroup found its named human expression.

The answer that emerged from the maternal line research was the island of Chios, and a family called **Mavrokordatos. The [Mavrokordatos](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mavrokordatos_family) were among the most distinguished of the Phanariot Greek families — Byzantine-descended Greek Orthodox nobility who served the Ottoman Empire* as dragomans and hospodars*, multilingual and cosmopolitan, maintaining connections across the Ottoman, Venetian, and Habsburg worlds simultaneously. On Chios, a branch of this family had intermarried with Italian families from the island’s Genoese heritage. That intersection — Byzantine Greek Phanariot meeting Genoese Italian colonial nobility — was identified as the ancestral root of the maternal line’s distinctive genetic signature: Greek and Italian signals amplified and persistent, Near Eastern micro-traces, the Byzantine Anatolia component in the ancient DNA.

That was the first thread. The second thread began on the other side of the family tree entirely.

Baron Alexis von Prittwitz (1909–2002): A Prussian Nobleman with Two Byzantine Lines

My mother’s father (my grandfather ) was Baron Alexis von Prittwitz (1909–2002). The von Prittwitz were a well-documented Silesian and Prussian noble family, and the Poland Podlaskie signal that dominates my mother’s main YDNAP test at 68% is the direct genetic expression of this northern European noble heritage — the chromosomal fingerprint of the Silesian-Prussian noble corridor, flanked by Germany Berlin, Germany Dresden, Germany Hannover, and Bohemia signals on chromosome 17.

On the surface, Baron Alexis von Prittwitz appears to represent the northern European counterweight to the Mediterranean maternal line: a Prussian nobleman whose ancestry runs through the east-German and west-Polish noble world. What the genealogical research reveals, however, is something far more extraordinary. Baron Alexis von Prittwitz carried, through his own two parental lines, not one but two entirely independent connections to the Byzantine world — arriving through completely different genealogical pathways, through different countries and different centuries, but converging in a single person.

Baron’s Mother’s Side: The Kroupensky Line

On Baron von Prittwitz’s mother’s side, the Kroupensky family — prominent Moldavian-Bessarabian nobility of the post-1812 Russian imperial period — leads, through the Mourousi family connection, to Sultana Mavrokordatos (b. 1721) and then to Nicolas Mavrokordatos (1599 Chios — 1653 Phanar). Nicolas was born on Chios. He died in the Phanar, the heart of Constantinople’s Greek Orthodox world, having made the journey that defined the Phanariot story: from island life in the Aegean to the diplomatic center of the Ottoman Empire.

His grandfather on the paternal line — also named Nicolas — was the founder of the **Mavrokordatos *noble house, born and died on Chios. The nobility of the family was established on that island before it transferred to Constantinople. And the grandmother of Nicolas (1599–1653) was ‘Giacobbina Giustiniani’*, born 1536, the daughter of Pier Giustiniani.

The **Giustiniani were not simply an Italian family living on Chios. They were the founding Genoese dynasty of the island itself. The Maona di Chio — the Genoese trading company they led — administered Chios from 1346 to 1566, for over two centuries. The [Giustiniani ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giustiniani)were its governors, its lords, its defining institutional presence. When the research into my mother’s maternal line identified “Genoese Italian intermarriage” as the ancestral root of the Italian genetic signals, it was pointing at exactly this family. The chromosomal signals — Italy Valcamonica, Italy Bergamo, Swiss Geneva, Sardinia — are the genetic fingerprints of the Ligurian and Lombard Italian world from which the Giustiniani **came.

Nicolas Mavrokordatos (1599–1653) was married to Ruxandra Beglitzi de Scarlatti, whose father originated from Florence. The Italian thread was not a single ancestral event in the Mavrokordatos family. It was a recurring pattern: a Giustiniani grandmother, a Florentine father-in-law. The family had an affinity for Italian intermarriage that stretched across at least three documented generations, on the island where Genoese and Greek Orthodox worlds had coexisted for two centuries.

Following the Kroupensky line further back reveals one more layer: a Komnenos ancestor, a 4th great-grandmother on Baron Alexis von Prittwitz’s mother’s side. The Komnenos dynasty ruled the Byzantine Empire from 1081 to 1185, producing some of its greatest emperors. After 1204, a Komnenian branch established the Empire of Trebizond, which survived until 1461. After the Ottoman conquest, Komnenian descendants dispersed into the Phanariot families of Constantinople and the noble houses of the Aegean world — precisely the world in which the **Mavrokordatos and Kroupensky moved. The Komnenos** name arriving through the Kroupensky line is, genealogically, entirely consistent with how Phanariot families operated: through generations of strategic intermarriage within their own tightly bounded aristocratic world.

Baron’s Father’s Side: Karl von Prittwitz and the Grimaldi Line

On Baron Alexis von Prittwitz’s father’s side, his grandfather Karl Nikolaus Hans Leonhard von Prittwitz (1839–1904) leads through his mother, Luise de Grasse (1806–1897), to a discovery that initially appears to belong to an entirely different world: Marguerite Grimaldi, my mother’s 7th great-grandmother, and the granddaughter of Honoré II Grimaldi (b. 1523).

The de Grasse family were French nobility from Provence, from the town of Grasse near the Ligurian coast — the precise geographic border zone between southern France and the Genoese world where the Grimaldi of Monaco had operated since Francesco Grimaldi captured its fortress in 1297. Grasse and Monaco are separated by a few kilometers of coastline. Luise de Grasse entering the von Prittwitz line through marriage is a reflection of how closely the French Provençal and Ligurian Italian noble worlds were interwoven along that coast.

The **Grimaldi were originally one of the great Guelph families of the Republic of Genoa — the same Genoese republic that sent the Giustiniani to administer Chios. The [Grimaldi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Grimaldi) and the [Giustiniani](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giustiniani)** moved in the same Ligurian aristocratic orbit, produced admirals and doges for the same republic, and represented the same Genoese colonial world. They are, in the broader picture of this ancestry, two faces of the same world arriving through two completely independent genealogical pathways: the Giustiniani through the Kroupensky-Mavrokordatos line, the Grimaldi through the von Prittwitz-de Grasse line.

And following the **Grimaldi line further back reveals the second Byzantine imperial connection: through Honoré II and the Grimaldi ancestry, the line leads eventually to Andronikos III Palaiologos, Byzantine Emperor (reigned 1328–1341). The Palaiologoi were the last ruling dynasty of the Byzantine Empire, holding Constantinople from 1261 until its fall in 1453. Andronikos III was one of their most active emperors, known for his military campaigns and administrative reforms. His dynasty and the Komnenos dynasty are the two supreme houses of Byzantine civilisation — and my mother’s father, Baron Alexis von Prittwitz**, carries documented ancestry from both, through two entirely separate lines within his own family tree.

The Convergence: Mapping the Threads

The full picture, when laid out systematically, is one of the most remarkable genealogical convergences that family research can produce. Four independent genealogical pathways — the direct maternal line, and three separate lines within the paternal grandfather — all lead back to the Byzantine and Genoese Italian world, and two of them lead back to the same island and the same family.

The Doubled Ancestor: Why the Genetics Reflects the Genealogy

The genetics of this convergence is not silent. The YDNAP multi-resolution testing reveals something that the genealogical research now explains with precision. At the great-grandparent resolution (12.5% genomic fragments, 3rd test), Greece Epirus fills an entire genomic slot. At the great-great-grandparent resolution (6.25% fragments, 2nd test), both Greece Macedonia and Italy Valcamonica each fill a complete slot. In the main test, Italy Valcamonica registers at a notable 10% — far higher than a single distant ancestor would normally produce.

The explanation lies in the structure of the family tree itself. The Chios ancestor — the woman who carries the Mavrokordatos-Italian heritage — appears not once but twice in the family tree of my mother: once through her direct maternal line, and once through her mother’s paternal line via Petr Andreevich Bobrinsky. This doubled-ancestor effect amplifies my mother’s genetic contribution far beyond what a single 5th great-grandparent would normally produce. A 5th great-grandparent would typically contribute approximately 1.5% of autosomal DNA. When the same ancestral family feeds into the tree from two independent directions, that contribution is effectively doubled — and when a second Italian noble line (the Grimaldi, via de Grasse) also enters the tree independently, the Italian signal is reinforced from yet another direction.

The result is a genetic profile in which Greek and Italian signals are persistent, recurring, and strong enough to fill entire genomic slots at higher resolution testing — not because a single ancestor was unusually close, but because the same ancestral world arrived through multiple independent pathways and accumulated. The chromosynthesis has been showing this all along: Greece Epirus across chromosomes 11, 14, 19, and 21; Italy Valcamonica on chromosomes 19 and 21; Italy Bergamo and Swiss Geneva on chromosome 21; Sardinia on chromosomes 18 and 19. These signals recur because their sources recur.

Two Imperial Dynasties: Komnenos and Palaiologos

It is worth pausing to appreciate what the genealogical research has revealed about the Byzantine imperial heritage in this family tree, because it is historically extraordinary. The Byzantine Empire’s two greatest ruling dynasties — the Komnenos and the Palaiologos — both appear as documented ancestors. And they arrive through two completely independent lines within the same ancestor.

The Komnenos dynasty (ruling 1081–1185, and then Trebizond until 1461) produced emperors of the caliber of Alexios I, who called the First Crusade; John II, considered one of Byzantium’s finest rulers; and Manuel I, whose court was among the most brilliant of the medieval world. Their descendants dispersed after the Ottoman conquest into exactly the Phanariot world — the **Mavrokordatos, the Mourousis, the Kroupensky** network — that the genealogical research has documented throughout.

The Palaiologos dynasty (ruling 1261–1453) held Constantinople through the final two centuries of Byzantine civilisation, including its catastrophic fall to the Ottomans in 1453. Andronikos III (reigned 1328–1341) was an energetic emperor who fought to consolidate Byzantine territory and reformed the judicial system. His dynasty’s connection to the Grimaldi — and through the Grimaldi to the von Prittwitz-de Grasse line — reflects the extensive diplomatic and dynastic networks the later Palaiologoi maintained with Western European powers as they sought allies against the Ottoman advance.

The ancient DNA’s Byzantine Anatolia component (2.6%, AD 500–1100) and the medieval ancient DNA layers, read in this context, are no longer simply “Byzantine Greek substrate.” They carry, at least in part, the specific genetic signatures of the imperial families themselves — two of the most historically significant dynasties of the medieval world, arriving in the same family through two separate lines.

The Phanariot Network: A World That Kept Finding Itself

One of the most illuminating aspects of this entire genealogical picture is what it reveals about how the Phanariot world actually functioned. The Phanariots — the Greek Orthodox nobility of Constantinople’s Phanar district, who served the Ottoman Empire as dragomans, diplomats, and hospodars — were not a large group. They were a relatively small, tightly bounded aristocratic class who intermarried across generations, maintained connections from Constantinople to Moldavia to the Aegean islands, and cultivated a shared identity as the heirs of Byzantine civilisation under Ottoman rule.

The genealogical research into my mother’s ancestry has documented this world from multiple entry points: the **Mavrokordatos on the maternal line; the Kroupensky-Mourousis-Mavrokordatos chain on the paternal Kroupensky side; the Komnenos name as the imperial ancestor within that chain; and the Grimaldi-Palaiologos** connection on the paternal de Grasse side. These are not independent coincidences. They are the natural result of researching any family with roots in the Phanariot world deeply enough: because the Phanariots themselves were so interconnected, multiple genealogical lines converge on the same families, the same islands, the same era.

What is unusual — and genuinely remarkable — is the degree of convergence in this particular family tree, and the fact that it arrives through such different nominal pathways: a Prussian noble family (von Prittwitz), a Moldavian administrative family (Kroupensky), a Provençal French noble family (de Grasse), and a direct Mediterranean maternal line. On the surface, these look like four different ancestral worlds. Beneath the surface, they all lead to Chios, to Constantinople, to Byzantium.

The Northern World: Von Prittwitz and the Baltic Heritage

The Byzantine convergence is the dramatic discovery of this research, but it should not obscure the equally deep and distinguished heritage that arrives through the dominant northern European lines. The von Prittwitz family themselves — whose Silesian and Prussian noble heritage produces the Poland Podlaskie signal at 68% of the main YDNAP test of my mother — represent a world of Germanic, Baltic, and Slavic nobility that has its own long history and its own genetic depth.

The ancient DNA’s Baltic component, rising from 45.8% in Late Antiquity to a peak of 61.4% in the medieval layer, reflects this northern heritage in its full temporal extent. The ancient sample comparisons from MTA add further names to this northern ancestral picture: the Grand Princes of Kiev (via haplogroup N1a1a1a1a1a1a, connected to Vladimir Monomakh, Yuri Dolgorukiy, and Alexander Nevsky); the House of Gediminas (the founding dynasty of Lithuania, including Gediminas himself, Vytautas the Great, and the Jagiellon kings); and the Jagiellon Dynasty connection via the T2b mtDNA haplogroup shared with Barbara Jagiellon.

The Viking and Kievan Rus ancient samples — from 590 AD through to 1787 AD — that appear as maternal ancient ancestors in the MTA analysis reflect this same northern world: the Baltic, Scandinavian, and Slavic populations whose genetic legacy dominates the chromosynthesis across most chromosomes. The Sparre nobility of Sweden, the Cholmondeley Castle connection in England, Melville Castle in Scotland, the House von Moltke and House von Eltz in the German world — these are the northern European noble connections that balance the Mediterranean and Byzantine heritage.

My mother is, in the most literal genetic and genealogical sense, the meeting point of two great aristocratic worlds: the Byzantine-Mediterranean world of the Phanariots, the Komnenoi, the Palaiologoi, the Giustiniani, and the Grimaldi on one side; and the Baltic-Slavic-Prussian world of the von Prittwitz, the Kroupensky, the Lithuanian Gediminids, and the Kievan Rus Princes on the other.

The Island That Was Always There

The genealogical detective story that this research became has a satisfying structural shape. It began with a haplogroup — K1a4j1, a rare mitochondrial signature pointing toward the ancient Near East and the eastern Mediterranean. It found its first named human expression in the Mavrokordatos family on Chios, with their Genoese Italian intermarriage. That was the first thread.

The second thread began with my mother’s Prussian father, Baron Alexis von Prittwitz, and the expectation that his ancestry would tell a purely northern European story. Instead, following his mother’s line through the Kroupensky family led to Bessarabia, then Moldavia, then Constantinople, then — unexpectedly, thrillingly — back to Chios, and to Nicolas Mavrokordatos (1599–1653), and to his grandmother Giacobbina Giustiniani, the Genoese dynasty’s own daughter, born on the same island.

And following his father’s line through Karl von Prittwitz and Luise de Grasse led to Marguerite Grimaldi — the granddaughter of Honoré II of Monaco, from the Genoese noble family whose orbit overlapped entirely with the Giustiniani — and then further back still to Andronikos III Palaiologos, Byzantine Emperor, the second imperial dynasty arriving through the second paternal line.

At every turn, what appeared to be a different story revealed itself as the same story. The Kroupensky and the von Prittwitz seemed to belong to different worlds. They both led to Byzantium. The Giustiniani and the Grimaldi arrived through different lines. They came from the same Genoese republic. The maternal line and the paternal line seemed to be independent. They shared the same ancestral family on the same island.

Chios is a small island. But in this family’s history, it is everywhere.

The haplogroup K1a4j1 that began this research is still there, unchanged, in every cell of the maternal line — the unbroken thread that pointed, in the end, not just to one family on one island, but to the extraordinary convergence of two Byzantine imperial dynasties, two Genoese noble houses, and four independent genealogical pathways, all leading home to the same place.
