What’s inside these “high protein” foods that you buy? And is high protein always healthy?
Are all high-protein products healthy? Simple answer: No. But let’s dive deeper.
Walk into any supermarket and you’ll see aisles filled with high protein options, from high protein bars, to drinks, to cookies, to ice cream, granola, and even WATER!
Protein is no longer a macronutrient, it’s a marketing gimmick, a buzzword, and a food trend. But with all these marketing fiascos, we need to take a step back, pause, and ask ourselves, “What’s actually inside these high-protein foods?
The Rise Of The Protein Trend
Protein has been and will remain a main source of energy and strength for us, it helps with muscle repair, hormone production, and even immune health. But in the past decade, it has been rebranded as the star for weight loss, fitness, and “clean” eating habits.
Carbs are now being demonized, and there has been a rise of low-carb, keto diet, gym culture, and crazy, unsustainable body-image-driven food choices, which have made protein the shining star of the nutrition world. And companies noticed and are taking advantage of it, OR US!
While the protein content is high, the ingredients used to make it that way are terrifying, to say the least.
Disguise
Flip the label of most high-protein snacks and you’ll find:
- Artificial sweeteners (sucralose, erythritol, and the beloved aspartame)
- Minimal fiber or micronutrients
- Gums, fillers, emulsifier and a crap ton of preservatives
- Sugar alcohols (which can cause bloating and even digestive problems- shocker? No, our bodies aren’t designed to withhold or digest chemically engineered food).
And the main one- Highly processed protein isolates (soy, whey, or pea protein that are usually in their most stripped-down form, aka more processed).
Bottom line, most “high-protein” foods sold in pretty colorful packages are just ultra-processed food, offering minimal, if any, real nutrition. And when protein is isolated (the way it usually is to make these products) and combined with chemically engineered additives, the body processes it very, very differently than the normal protein that comes from nature, like salmon and egg.
So, is more protein really always better?
Once again, no.
Yes, protein is important, especially for growing children, athletes, or people recovering from an illness. Fun fact: the average person in developed countries already gets enough protein, often more than needed.
So what matters more than just more and more protein?
- Where does it come from
- What is it packaged with (Fiber, Fats, Fake sugar?)
- How processed is it
A *study* in 2022 in Frontiers in Nutrition found that diets high in ultra-processed protein products can lead to metabolic stress, inflammation, and long-term health risks (especially when paired with low-quality fats and artificial ingredients).
Health ≠ High protein
Just because it says “high protein” does not mean it’s healthy or a good choice.
Protein cookies- still cookies
Protein chips- still chips
Protein bars- fancy, nicely marketed candy bars
This is not to shame those who eat protein bars or those who eat them- it’s to simply reframe. Real nourishment comes from wholefoods, where nutrients work in a beautiful synergy that our bodies are used to and know how to digest! But when we reduce food to a number — grams of protein — we miss the whole point.
ACTION
If you want high-protein products, ask yourself:
- Is the ingredient list short?
- Can you pronounce the ingredients? Because, in all honesty, sometimes it sounds like gibberish!
- Does it contain real food, or is it just powders? Fillers? And more additives?
Better yet, you should always aim to get your protein from: eggs, fish, nuts, seeds, legumes, Greek yoghurt, and many more options that are not highly- refined or processed.
Protein is essential, but context matters.
Real health is built through awareness, intention, and learning to feed and fuel your body right.
