The Day I Was Scrubbed Like a Sultan
I went in for a Turkish bath thinking it would be a serene spa day. What I didn’t expect was to be exfoliated with the determination of a woman avenging centuries of dirt — or to end up singing a haunting Turkish melody with her mid-scrub. Somewhere between the steam, the song, and the soap, Istanbul worked its quiet magic on me

They say when in Rome, do as the Romans do. But when in Istanbul, brace yourself for the Hamam, a centuries-old tradition that’s part spa, part sauna, and part spiritual exfoliation bootcamp.
A Steam-Powered Time Machine
The moment I stepped inside, the air changed-warm, misty, scented faintly of olive soap and history. The Hamam, or Turkish bath, dates back to the Ottoman Empire, when cleanliness was considered not just good hygiene but a spiritual duty. These baths became architectural marvels- grand marble halls with heated stone platforms (göbek taşı) where people would relax, chat, and slowly melt into puddles of contentment.
The Scrub of a Lifetime
First I was given a Turkish towel, asked to strip and lie down in a room on a heated marble platform. It was a common room for men and women.
Just as I was adjusting to the gentle heat, my tellak (attendant) arrived. She was tiny but powerful. Without much small talk, she led me to a private room and gestured for me to lie down on the cot that somehow reminded me of an operation table!
And then it began.
She took out what looked like a mitten but felt like sandpaper imported directly from the underworld. With firm, expert strokes, she began to scrub. I watched, fascinated and partly horrified- as layers of grayish rolls (apparently dead skin, though I briefly suspected my past mistakes) curled off me.
But then something unexpected happened. As she scrubbed, she began to sing — a hauntingly beautiful Turkish melody that floated through the steam like incense. Her voice echoed off the marble walls, ancient and tender, and before I knew it, I found myself singing along, trying to follow her words. We didn’t share a language, but somehow we sang together- two women in a cloud of steam, rhythmically exfoliating the distance between our worlds.
It was oddly moving. There I was, covered in soap bubbles and half my former skin, having a moment of musical transcendence in a 500-year-old bathhouse.
Bubble Mountain Bliss
Once I was sufficiently polished and spiritually harmonized, she returned with what can only be described as a bubble avalanche. She filled a pillowcase with soapy foam, twirled it through the air, and released a mountain of bubbles that landed on me with the softness of clouds. It was glorious. I smelled like paradise.
Then came a gentle massage, rhythmic and soothing — the perfect apology after the scrubbing apocalypse. Warm water cascaded over me again and again, washing away everything- stress, exhaustion, and what little ego I had left.
Emerging a New Human
Afterward, I was guided to a cool room, wrapped in fresh towels, and handed a cup of Turkish tea. I sipped it slowly, dazed but peaceful, feeling like a freshly laundered human being. My skin glowed. My pores sang. Bliss.
Would I do it again? Absolutely!
A Turkish Hamam isn’t just a bath, it is a sensory journey through history, hospitality, and a bit of humbling. You’ll walk in feeling curious, and walk out feeling like you’ve been reborn, moisturized, and mildly steam-cooked.
In short: go for the scrub, stay for the serenity- and if you’re lucky, you might even leave humming a tune you didn’t know you knew.
