My Intrusive Thoughts at 3 a.m.

Right now, I am sitting on a bed with a blanket covering my legs, my computer on my lap, and a Shin-Chan plushie with a head bigger than mine next to me.

How do we see the color ‘white’ if it is the absence of all color? If the fact were true, white would not be visible, as no distinctive color would be visible. Shouldn’t it be that white is the presence of all light and no darkness?

Why is the color ‘black’ referred to when defining emptiness in objects such as a deep, empty well or in space? Isn’t black known as the presence of all colors? Like, people say that something is empty, emotionless, and lifeless when they describe a really deep well or hole, or maybe a drawing made with only shadows as the main picture on a white sheet.

Can we conclude that black and white are no different when it comes to quantity? People say white is positive and full of energy, while empty at the same time. They also say black is a mix of all the colors in existence, yet empty like a void, even though it contains a lot of stuff mixed together, which goes unnoticed by humanity. Aren’t these colors the representation of everything and nothing at the same time?

Why is it preferred that laptops are used on a table, when their purpose was to be used on one’s lap? Why do people count a laptop as a device supposed to be left at home while traveling? Wasn’t it created as a portable device for PCs and desktops? Aren’t tablets a smaller and more portable version of a laptop, when the laptop is a portable version of a desktop and PC? Why do people wear watches if they carry a phone and a power bank in their pockets? Why were smartwatches made, if a phone can do the same things a smartwatch can? Why did people get rid of wired earphones, even if they are more efficient?

Why do people say that electric cars save the atmosphere by emitting less greenhouse gases, even though the extraction of lithium required uses vehicles and processes that release a lot of greenhouse gases? Doesn’t this make up for all the pollution created by cars? Why is automobile racing encouraged as a sport, even though it wastes fuel and releases extra greenhouse gases?

Why do we always feel that the next stage of life is luckier than the one we are in?

Why do I feel that when we are toddlers, we think the kids who go to school (kindergarten) are lucky? The kindergarteners think that kids in LKG are lucky. Kids in LKG think that kids in UKG are lucky. Kids in UKG think that 1st graders are lucky. This continues through 12th grade, where students then think college-goers are lucky.

These college-goers think that the people who have graduated are lucky. The graduates think that employees are lucky. Employees think that their seniors are lucky. The seniors think that their manager is lucky. The manager thinks that the CEO is lucky, who thinks that the owner is lucky. The owner probably wishes for retirement and rest from all this. Retired people may think grandparents are lucky.

And in the end, grandparents think that their grandchildren are lucky. Throughout these stages of life, we have different levels of time, energy, freedom, responsibility, and money. Luck may simply be noticing what we lack in others’ lives, not about having everything.

Isn’t this concerning? Shouldn’t we do something about this?

Or maybe some questions are not meant to have direct answers.

And so, maybe I just need to close my laptop, adjust my blanket, look at my oversized Shin-Chan plushie, and sleep over it.
