Maybe We Don’t Need a Big Reason to Be Happy

This week, I caught myself laughing at something very small. A funny scene in a movie, a friend’s joke.
Not the kind of laughter that comes because everything is suddenly okay. Not the kind that means life has become light and easy. Just a small, unexpected laugh in the middle of an ordinary day.
And for a few seconds, I almost felt guilty for it.
As if I needed a bigger reason to be happy. As if joy had to wait until the unresolved parts of my life were finally resolved.
That was when I started thinking about how often we postpone joy.
Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just in small ways.
We tell ourselves when we feel lighter, when things are clearer.
When the answer comes. When the money is better. When the work makes more sense. When the thing we are waiting for finally happens. When we feel more settled. When we have fewer questions. When life looks a bit more like the version I imagined.
Until then, we keep moving.
We keep doing what needs to be done. We keep showing up. We keep being responsible. We keep telling ourselves we’re fine and that joy will come later, when there is a better reason for it.
But lately, I have been wondering
What if joy does not always need a big reason?
What if joy is allowed to visit before everything is fixed?
I think many of us are living in the middle of things.
Not exactly unhappy, but not fully settled either.
There are areas of our lives that are fine and areas that still feel uncertain. There are things we are grateful for and things we are quietly waiting on. There are days we feel hopeful, and days we feel tired of needing hope.
So we pause our happiness.
We tell ourselves it would be irresponsible to be too happy when there are still unanswered questions.
We act like joy has to wait its turn.
But maybe it does not.
-Maybe we can laugh hard at something silly even when we still have things I am praying about.
-Maybe we can dress up for no big reason.
-Maybe we can enjoy a good meal without first earning it through exhaustion.
-Maybe we can be happy about someone else’s good news without using it to measure my own life.
-Maybe I can take a slow walk, play a song I love, reply to a kind message, sit in a quiet room, and let the small good thing be good.
Not because everything is perfect.
But because everything does not have to be perfect for something to be beautiful.
That is the part I am learning.
Joy is not always an announcement. Sometimes it is a small permission.
-Permission to notice the good part of the day.
-Permission to be present in a soft moment without apologizing for it.
-Permission to stop treating happiness like something I must qualify for.
-Permission to say, “This part of my life is still sweet,” even when other parts are still unclear.
And maybe that is not denial.
Maybe that is balance.
Because it is possible to be honest about what is hard without making hardship the only true thing about your life.
It is possible to still be waiting and still be grateful.
It is possible to still be unsure and still laugh.
It is possible to still want more and still enjoy what is here.
Life can be unfinished and still hold small moments that deserve to be received.
I do not want to become the kind of person who only knows how to enjoy life after the big thing happens.
Because what if the big thing takes longer than I thought?
What if clarity comes slowly?
What if the answer arrives in pieces?
What if the life I am in right now is not just a waiting room but still my life?
I do not want to miss it.
I do not want to look back one day and realize that there were good things around me, but I was too focused on what had not happened yet to notice them.
A few small things have made me happy lately.
- Publishing this newsletter every Saturday
- Explaining the vision of the LinkedIn live series with potential speakers
- Food that tasted better because I was actually present enough to enjoy it—catfish pepper soup
- A kind message I read twice—reading reviews of my book, The Builders
- The relief of finishing something small.
- The quiet satisfaction of wearing something that felt like me.
- A moment where I realized I was not as anxious as I had been the week before.
None of these things changed my whole life.
But maybe they were not meant to.
Maybe they were just reminders that life can still be gentle in small places.
Not forced joy.
Not fake joy.
Not the kind that pretends everything is fine.
Just the kind that says
This made me smile. This was kind. This was enough for this moment. This reminded me that life is still touching me gently.
-Maybe the joy was a conversation that came at the right time.
-Maybe it was a song.
-Maybe it was a meal.
-Maybe it was sunlight through the window.
-Maybe it was finishing something small.
-Maybe it was hearing yourself laugh and realising you had not laughed like that in a while.
-Maybe it was a tiny answer.
-Maybe it was a quiet Saturday.
-Maybe it was simply waking up and feeling like the day did not ask too much from you.
Whatever it was, I hope you let it count.
I hope you do not dismiss it because it was small.
Small joy is still joy.
And sometimes, small joy is what helps us stay tender while life is still unfolding.
So maybe I do not need a big reason to be happy.
Maybe I only need to stop postponing the small reasons already here.
This week, I am asking myself a simple question:
What made me happy, even though life is still not perfect?
And I want to ask you the same.
One small thing that made me happy this week was…
Write one thing. Or three. Or ten.
And if you can, reply to this newsletter with one of them.
I want to know the small good thing that found you this week.
Because maybe joy grows when we name it.
Maybe we become more present when we stop dismissing the little things.
Maybe life does not have to be perfect before we allow ourselves to enjoy parts of it.
So I will ask you again, simply:
What is one small thing that made you happy this week, even though life is still not perfect?
