Congratulations, You’re in Your 40s. India Updated. You Didn’t.
Hitting your 40s in India feels like running two operating systems at once; one from 1998 and one that wants OTP every 3 minutes.
Congratulations, You’re in Your 40s. India Updated. You Didn’t.

Being in your 40s as an Indian is a beautiful paradox: You’re old enough to understand everything, young enough to still pretend you don’t care, and wise enough to know that everyone is lying; including you.
You exist in two Indias simultaneously. One where you dialed numbers on a rotary phone with the precision of a bomb-disposal expert. And another where you panic if your UPI doesn’t go through in 0.2 seconds because “maybe RBI banned you?”
This is the decade where you finally understand your parents without becoming them…Well, mostly.
You laugh at their quirks, but then one random morning you catch yourself saying, “Lights off when you leave the room,” and realize the transformation has begun.
Slow. Silent. Inevitable. Like all horror stories.
You’ve lived long enough to know nothing is permanent: not governments, not relationships, not your hairline (true story!).
You watched India go from landline waiting lists to instant digital KYC. You survived liberalization, demonetization, digitization, and that one year the entire country pretended to know what NFTs were.
We carry both Indias inside us like a badly compressed ZIP file.
We once stood in queues for gas cylinders like it was an Olympic sport. Now we complain when Swiggy takes five extra minutes because “the rider seems lost.”
We saved plastic bags like national treasure. Now we lecture people about sustainability while hoarding Amazon boxes for “future use.”
We wrote letters that took weeks to arrive. Now we get offended when someone blue-ticks us and goes offline.
This duality? No other generation has it.
We’re not cynical like our parents, nor are we blissfully naive like our children who think history started sometime around iPhone 6.
We’re hopeful, but not delusional. Ambitious, but not desperate.
We’ve seen systems collapse and reboot — sometimes overnight — so we don’t panic. We just quietly say “hmm” and wait for everyone else to catch up.
The real joy of being an Indian in your 40s is this earned clarity. You can translate between generations, tech eras, and worldviews without combusting. You can enjoy the joint-family chaos of childhood and the quiet Netflix solitude of adulthood.
You can laugh at India, get annoyed by India, complain about India… and still love it more fiercely than ever.
Because we don’t just live in India. We get India. Her contradictions. Her chaos. Her unreasonable optimism. Her ability to function despite logic, infrastructure, and common sense.
And the best part? We’ve stopped apologizing for being Indian. Not because we’re perfect — we’re a carnival of imperfections . But because we’ve realized that the madness is not a temporary glitch.
It’s the whole ecosystem. It’s a feature, not a bug.
That’s the gift of our 40s. Not youth. Not wealth. But clarity.
