Очікування найгіршого почали формуватися ще у січні. Але десь із середини лютого — після попереджень у західній пресі та суперечок влади з суспільством про «шашлики» — питання «Чи буде війна?» змінилося на «Коли саме?».

Цієї ночі дружина не спала до четвертої ранку, чекала. Але перші вибухи розбудили місто трохи пізніше — десь опів на шосту. Вибухів було декілька. Як потім з’ясувалося, атакували військову частину Національної гвардії за три кілометри від нас.

Ми почали скролити стрічки новин, хоча в цьому вже не було сенсу. Сумнівів не лишалося — почалося. Наше місто Вишгород, північне передмістя Києва, цілком виправдовує свою назву. З вікон нашого будинку, починаючи десь із четвертого поверху, столицю видно як на долоні. І саме звідти тепер гриміло.

У дворі будинку почався рух. Ті, хто зміг швидко зорієнтуватися, а можливо й заздалегідь усе підготував, завантажували речі до машин і від’їжджали. Автомобілів у дворі ставало менше, але якогось особливого ажіотажу не було.

Телефон розривався від дзвінків: телефонували родичі, друзі, знайомі — всі були в шоці, без ідей чи планів. У повітрі висіла напруга від відчуття безвиході. Ближче до восьмої я пішов до аптеки — треба було викупити ліки, які ми замовили на «Таблетках» ще вчора, у нашому вчорашньому, мирному житті.

The anticipation of the worst began to take shape back in January. By mid-February — following warnings in the Western media and the government’s debates with the public about “barbecues” — the question “Will there be a war?” shifted to “When exactly?”.

That night, my wife couldn’t sleep; she stayed up until 4 AM, waiting. But the first explosions woke the city a bit later — around half past five. There were several explosions. As we learned later, they were targeting a National Guard base three kilometers away from us.

We started scrolling through our news feeds, though there was no point to it anymore. There was no room left for doubt — it had begun. Our town, Vyshhorod, a northern suburb of Kyiv, fully lives up to its name. From the windows of our building, starting around the fourth floor, you can see the capital as if it were in the palm of your hand. And that morning, thunder was roaring from there.

Movement began in the courtyard. Those who managed to react quickly, or perhaps had prepared everything in advance, were loading bags into their cars and driving away. The parking lot was emptying, yet there was no real chaos.

The phone kept ringing constantly — relatives, friends, and acquaintances. Everyone was in shock, with no ideas or plans. A heavy tension hung in the air from a sense of helplessness. Closer to eight, I stepped outside and headed to the pharmacy. I needed to pick up some medication we had ordered online via a local app just the day before — back when life was still normal and peaceful.
