On-air Macaque Hitchhiker

The Vignette Gazette Edition #174

I rested my forehead against the cool double-pane of the aircraft window. An attempt to wonder over the impossible possibility of human existence. Outside, the view was an obsidian nightmare, a violent wash of dark clouds. Lightning strobed with a frequency that felt personal, illuminating a jagged landscape of bruised cumulus and the distant, wet glitter of a metropolis far below. Then, there was the thing itself.

A monkey. A rhesus macaque, if my science revision is strong enough. It was sitting. On the wing. At 30,000 feet.

It wasn’t just there. It was sitting perfectly balanced, its small, wet fingers gripping the aluminium skin with a stability that mocked the laws of aerodynamics. It sat calmly, a damp, biological gargoyle, staring back at the fuselage with eyes that caught the lightning flashes. It wore a little dark baseball cap, backwards, like some hipster hitchhiker defying physics.

This was not a mechanical failure. This was something worse: an anomaly of reality itself. A glitch in the fabric of what must be. My brain clawed for rational explanations. Maybe it was a high-altitude research drone designed like a monkey? No. I could see the individual hairs matted by the rain, the tension in its tail. A hologram? Projecting onto what medium?

I felt the Specific Humidity of Dread rise in the cabin — a subtle, cold sweat on my skin. I looked down at my hand. My index finger was already pressing hard against the glass, pointing at the impossibility outside the window. It was an instinctive, childlike gesture.

The anomaly blinked slowly. It didn’t smile, but it seemed utterly aware that I was watching. As another massive fork of lightning split the sky, its tail flicked, and I knew: it was comfortable. It belonged out there in the impossible ice and lightning more than I belonged in my pressurised, aluminium shell.
