Are We Still Worshipping the Golden Calf?

A Mirror for Modern Believers

Among the stories in the Quran, there’s one that seems rather strange — the story of Prophet Moses’ people worshipping a golden calf. Most of us accept this story literally: a simple tale about a gold statue shaped like a calf, worshipped by ignorant people.

But when we only understand it literally, we miss the deeper lesson, the essential. We think, “That was then; those people were foolish — surely we wouldn’t do something like that today.”

We modern people think, “Worship a cow statue? Impossible! The Prophet taught us 1400 years ago that there’s no god but Allah.”

Here’s something interesting to consider: weren’t those people not only visited by a Prophet, but actually with him at the time? Whether times are good or bad, rich or poor, healthy or ill; they love, honor, and cherish him and hold his mission and vision up in faith. They knew who Allah was, yet still chose to worship that golden calf statue.

What was so special about that golden calf that they’d associate it with Allah?

Was it gold?

Or were they so ignorant that even with a Prophet present, they couldn’t recognize the oneness of God Almighty?

Perhaps there’s a deeper symbolic meaning behind the Quran’s depiction of the calf as a golden statue.

Surah Az-Zumar [39] verse 27

“Indeed, We have set forth for mankind in this Quran every kind of parable so they may take heed.”

It’s not just about a statue, not just about gold, not just about a cow — but something that has a certain power over people, enough to compromise and twist their Aqidah.

It unsettles a truth they’ve carried for a lifetime, one they’ve obeyed out of devotion, habit, and quiet fear.

Forgive the simplicity of the comparison, but the cow or calf remains one of the clearest symbols of compounding productivity. Every product it yields — and every calf it brings forth — adds incremental value, much like disciplined investment over time. It may be a humble example, yet it captures the spirit of a healthy economic ecosystem: grounded, enduring, and quietly prosperous.

An economic system that is a productive asset capable of generating repeated productivity and growing into prosperity.

A symbol of a system that produces power, ownership, and wealth that can provide welfare and comfort in life.

This attachment to the dunya is what nourishes humanity’s love for worldly life — something profoundly difficult to release when one begins the journey toward truth.

Look at the emphasis given in the Qur’an in Surah At-Tin, verses 4 and 5.

We have certainly created man in the best of stature (4); Then We return him to the lowest of the low (5)

Without realizing it, the heart grows obedient to it, follows its pull, and fears the idea of letting it go. It becomes a quiet form of servitude to the very world we were meant to treat only as a temporary resting place.

Let us reflect together on what Allah explains in Surah Ali-Imran, verse 14.

Made attractive to people is the love of desires — of women, children, heaps of gold and silver, fine horses, livestock, and farmland. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but with Allah is the best return.

Shirk is not limited to the worship of statues or physical objects. The true measure lies in what they obey: if revelation no longer directs their judgment and desire becomes the master they follow, then something has already been raised as a deity besides Allah.

Surah Al-Furqaan [25]:43

Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be a guardian over him?

The question is: how come did they still worship the calf even though a Prophet was among them?

They had received revelation, witnessed miracles, heard warnings, and knew Allah is One. Yet still they stumbled.

Their mistake wasn’t just in verbal creed but in obedience within their daily life system. They prioritized the living system they’d been familiar with over the living system of Allah brought by the Prophet.

This should be a mirror for people today.

So many verbally profess that their creed states God is One — Allah.

They’re so confident they’ve never committed shirk like those golden calf worshippers of old.

Yet still, they don’t judge according to what’s contained in His revelation.

The financial system practiced is crafted from conventional banking to legitimize forms of profit that resemble riba (usury).

The political system operates nothing like what the Prophet established.

They blindly obey traditional teachings, even when misaligned with revelation, fearing ostracism and control by authorities protecting their status quo.

Losing these would damage their social reputation, possibly destroying their public standing. As social creatures, humans fear this most — others’ judgment.

Quoting Surah Al-Maa’idah 5:44:

So do not fear the people but fear Me.

The Quran’s calf story reminds us that shirk isn’t necessarily prostrating before statues.

Shirk is placing something besides Allah as life’s determiner — giving it obedience above His revelation’s commands.

For comfort, while His commands remain unimplemented, lulled by life’s deceptions.

Surah Al-An’aam (Livestock) 6:32

Worldly life is only play and amusement. The Hereafter is far better for the mindful. Won’t you understand?

Today it’s not a golden statue, but entire belief structures and life and living systems divert and compromise people from complete submission to Allah and His Deen: system, teaching, and the way He wanted us all to be.

Something precious to them. Like a golden calf placed before them.

This is “modern golden calf” worship.

Surah Al-Qasas 28:60

Whatever you’re given is worldly life’s enjoyment and decoration. What’s with Allah is better and lasting. Won’t you reason?
