Tanka 5 — Sunglasses

Original Tanka (Japanese) 人の目を うかがいながら 生きていた サングラスの日 今はお別れ

English Tanka (Translation) I used to live behind sunglasses, watching others — but now I’ve said goodbye to hiding who I am.

Artist note

Japanese： 目は口ほどに物を言う。本心を隠す象徴として、私はサングラスを比喩的に描いた。一見すると明るい夏の日の風景だが、その奥には対照的な複雑な心の揺らぎがある。

English Translation： Eyes speak as much as words do. I depicted sunglasses as a metaphor for hiding true emotions. At first glance, it’s a bright summer scene, but behind it lies a quiet turmoil of feelings.

Tanka 6 — Composition

Original Tanka (Japanese) 人生の 愛の組み立て さまざまだ 要は信じ 慈しむこと

English Tanka (Translation) In this life, there’s no single way to build our love — but faith and kindness are always at the heart.

Japanese： ピエト・モンドリアンの作品にインスパイアされた。垂直と水平、そして三原色の構成美で知られるモンドリアンスタイルは、ここでは傾いた軸と、カラフルなレインボーカラーに生まれ変わった。

English Translation： Inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian. His signature vertical and horizontal lines, along with the primary colors, are reimagined here — tilted and reborn in the vibrant hues of the rainbow.

Tanka 7 — Arabian Nights

Original Tanka (Japanese) 愛される 千の世界を 語るとき 多様な文化 認める心

English Tanka (Translation) When we speak of a thousand stories of being loved, we must open our hearts to every culture’s truth.

Japanese： LGBTQ+を受け入れない国は今も多い。しかし、この『アラビアンナイト』は世界でもっとも広く読まれている物語の一つだろう。だからこそ、世界中で多様な愛が語られる日が来ることを願っている。

English Translation： There are still many countries that do not accept LGBTQ+ people. Yet Arabian Nights remains one of the most widely read stories across the globe. That’s why I hope for a day when diverse love can be shared and celebrated everywhere.
