Sometimes Love Means Losing… and Still Choosing to Stay

Love isn’t always equal…sometimes, it’s about who’s willing to bend first.

I’ll be honest… For the longest time, I didn’t believe in “one-sided effort.” You know, those moments when one person keeps showing up, keeps forgiving, keeps trying, even when the other doesn’t seem to notice, let alone reciprocate.

My mom used to say something in Urdu that always made me roll my eyes: “Jahan taluk rakhna ho wahan jhuk jane se kabhi koi insaan chhota nahi hota.” It means “Where a relationship matters, humbling yourself doesn’t make you small.”

Back then, I thought it was just… old-school. I believed in mutual effort… you do your part, I’ll do mine. Fifty-fifty. Fair and square. And anything less than that? Well, I’d call it settling.

But life… life has a strange way of humbling you. Of showing you that relationships aren’t built on balance sheets, they’re built on hearts. And hearts? They don’t always count things the way we do.

There came a time when I found myself being the only one trying. The only one texting first. Saying sorry first. Bending, even when it wasn’t my fault. And for a while, I was angry. Angry at them… and honestly, angry at myself. Because it didn’t feel fair.

I’d ask myself: “Why am I the one always fixing this?” “Why can’t they just meet me halfway?”

But then something shifted. I remembered what i read somewhere and more importantly, I felt what it meant. Sometimes… It’s not about fair. It’s about love. And love? Real, deep, soul-shaking love … is rarely symmetrical.

You see, sometimes the person who loves more… becomes the person who bends more. They become the bridge. The soft landing. The one who sacrifices… even when they know there might be nothing waiting on the other side.

Not because they’re weak. Not because they have no pride. But because their heart simply… won’t let go.

And yes, it hurts. God, it hurts to give and give, with no guarantees. To swallow your ego and say, “It’s okay, I’ll try again,” when all you want to do is walk away.

But here’s the thing I’ve come to learn: Love demands sacrifice… and the very first thing it asks for is your ego. That sharp, burning pride that screams, “Why me?” And the truth is… sometimes it has to be you.

I’m not saying you should always be the one who gives in. God knows we all need love that’s mutual, respect that’s reciprocated, effort that’s shared.

But every once in a while, there comes a moment when love isn’t about keeping score. It’s not about who said sorry last or who called first. It’s about who can be the bigger person… The one who sees the bigger picture, even when it hurts in the now.

Because sometimes, that quiet act of staying… of bending… of forgiving… Is the loudest, bravest thing you can do.

So, to the one who’s tired… The one who keeps trying, keeps loving, keeps bending… I see you. And no, you’re not small. You’re not weak. You’re not naive.

You’re brave. Because choosing love, even when it’s hard, especially when it’s hard … is never a loss.

It’s a kind of strength only a few will ever understand.

Key Message: True strength in love isn’t always about equality or mutual effort… sometimes, it’s about choosing to bend, to forgive, and to love deeply even when it hurts, because real love often begins where pride ends.
