The air was thick with fog as Elara stood at the edge of the drop, gazing out over the endless sea. She adjusted the straps of her haversack and took a deep breathing spell, the salty walkover filled her lungs. She had come this far through dense forests, raging rivers, and treacherous mountain whirl. All for this consequence. Her grandfather’s old journal had made her here, a plaza brand only by the word “ Galleon ’s End “ scrawled in fading ink. The legend was vindicated: shroud in this remote, forgotten recess of the world was the treasure of the Storm King, a plagiarizer whose name took concern into sailor boys’ hearts centuries ago. But Elara wasn’t interested in atomic number 79 or jewels. She was after something far to a greater extent precious a reply. Her granddaddy had become flat under mysterious conditions, his last Holy Scripture an inscrutable warning: “ The function will point you, but the mist will delude you. ” Elara had been determined to be his trailhead to unveil the accuracy behind his disappearance. But as the fog grew denser, she set out to wonder if it was all some detailed trap. She had seen the mist before thick and swirling, it distorted reality, like a hold-up thing, laboring at the sharpness of her sanity. Suddenly, a vestige appeared in the fog, a public figure approaching from a distance. Her eyes bound off a rhythm. “ Who ‘s there? “ she foretold, but her voice sounded immersed by the mist as if the very gentle wind was judged to sustain her password from escaping. The fig didn’t respond, but the lineation produced cleared, discovering an old Man with a long white beard and a brave grimace. He tires a tatterdemalion cloak, its boundary dart in the unseen wind. “ Elara, you ’ve added up, ” he said, his voice like the rustle of drained leaves. “ Who are you? “ Elara called for, transfixing her ingroup tightly, instinctively reaching for the dagger at her side. “ I am the Keeper, ” the human race replied, his heart peeking beneath the exhaust hood. “ And you are not the first to issue forth seeking the Storm King’s treasure. But few have retorted. ” “ Why? ” Elara demanded, stepping closer. The atmosphere around them seems to arise insensate, the fog insensatez into a virtually tangible rampart. “ Where’s my grandfather? ” The Keeper suspires, his breather visible in the chilly air. “ The treasure you seek is barely atomic number 79 and silver, minor. It is a key samara to something far older, far more life-threatening. The map you deem, the ace your grandfather followed, is not merely an usher to the prize. It is a map to the bosom of the storm, where the boundary between the aliveness and the all-in grows thin. ” Elara’s heart bucket along. “ My grandfather. . . he was testing to find it, wasn’t he? The heart of the tempest. ” The Keeper nods gravely. “ Yes. But the mist can drive someone mad, and not all who seek the heart live on it. The storm claims those who dare to control it. ” An upstage rumble of thunder sounded in the distance, though the sky in a higher place was even so clear-cut. The ocean got to churn, waves rising and ramming with a fury that sent a shudder down her spine. “ I didn’t come for treasure, ” Elara says, her vocals unfluctuating despite the growing unease. “ I make out to determine the the true. And I’m not left alone without it. ” The Keeper’s heart softened, but there was something unreadable behind them. “ Very well, so. But make love this – once you step beyond this degree, there is no work back. The violent storm will provide you with a way of life you can not predict. ” Without another word, he turned and set out to walk into the mist. Elara hesitated, and so succeeded. The fog closed down around her, muffling all speech sound, and she felt as if the macrocosm had reduced down to merely her and the Keeper. But the deeper they are active, the more the air seems to thrill with energy. And so, without warning, the dry land beneath her invertebrate foot founder’s way of life. Elara gasped as she tumbled into iniquity, a scream resurrecting in her throat. But it never bunk. There equal entirely the sensation of come, gyrate deeper into the obscure. When she finally collided with the footing, she wasn’t sure how much prison term had evanesced. But she was no longer brook on the jumpy cliffs of Galleon’s Conclusion. The melodic line around her was quick, and she could see the distant roar of moving ridge, though they seemed. . . faulty. Upstage. Like echoes from another populace. The mist had set out, and before she stood an ancient, half-fall off the ship, its cruise tattered and torn, its Hull chip at with unknown symbolization she had never met before. And then, from the dark, a public figure ill-treats onwards – the net person she had always expected to experience. Her grandpa. “ Elara, ” he whispered, a dim smile driving at his backtalk. “ You’ve crap it. ” Her core lumber in her chest of drawers. “ Grandfather but you how? ” “ I get it, ” he said, his interpreter remote and hollow. “ The heart of the tempest. . . But the price was more than I could stomach. ” The air current picked up around them, and the fog appeared to stir with a life sentence of its own. Elara paced forward, her legs trembling. “ What did you get hold of? What befall here? ” He looked at her with an oculus wide-cut of grief. “ The inwardness is a powerfulness beyond comprehension. But it is cursed. And I revere that I have already devoted the price for seeking it. ” Dead, the ship creaked and groaned, as though it was coming active. The mist inspires once again, swirling like a vortex. “ Depart now, Elara, ” her grandfather pleaded, his voice fleet. “ The heart. . . it will take you, also, if you are not measured. ” But before she could talk, the ship fell into the mist, along with the sound of his representative. Elara stood alone on the edge of the cosmos, the map in her bridge playing her sole template in this strange and precarious place. The storm raged around her, and the way forward was uncertain. But one affair was clear: she had occurred too far to flex backward now.
