Google Redirects: What “goto” URLs Really Mean in Search

While analyzing search results and links, I sometimes come across URLs that look different from the actual website address. One example is Google’s goto URL redirect.

At first glance, these URLs can look confusing. Instead of seeing the final destination directly, the link passes through Google’s redirect system before sending the user to another website.

For example, a search result may appear to point toward a website, but the underlying URL can contain a Google redirect before reaching the final page.

I think it’s important to understand what is happening here before making assumptions about SEO value.

A Google redirect is primarily designed to handle how users are sent from Google’s services to external destinations. It isn’t the same thing as a website owner creating a 301 redirect between two of their own URLs.

This distinction matters when analyzing links. A goto style URL shouldn't automatically be interpreted as a backlink from Google or as a special ranking signal.

I also find it useful to understand redirects alongside broader **technical SEO**. Redirects, canonical URLs, crawling, indexing, and URL structure all affect how search engines and users interact with a website.

Another area I pay attention to is **anchor text**. The visible text of a link gives users context about the destination, while the actual URL behind that link can sometimes be different from what is displayed.

For anyone analyzing Google’s URLs, I recommend focusing on the final destination rather than assuming the redirect itself has SEO value.

I’ve explained **Google goto URL redirects, how they work, why Google uses them, and what they mean for SEO** in my detailed guide.

For me, the main takeaway is simple: understand the redirect mechanism before interpreting the link as an SEO signal.
