The Golden Perspective

There’s something deeply human about wanting to be right.

We like to believe that the way we see the world is the way the world truly is. When someone challenges our opinion, even gently, it can feel personal. Whether it’s politics, relationships, religion, parenting, or even something as small as where to eat dinner, we instinctively defend our perspective as if it is part of our identity. Maybe that comes from pride. Maybe from experience. Maybe from fear of being misunderstood.

As human beings, we often cling to our views because they are shaped by our memories, our upbringing, our pain, and our personal victories. No two people arrive at the same thought in exactly the same way. Yet despite knowing this, we still find ourselves surprised when someone sees things differently from us.

Have you ever been contradicted by someone and wondered how they could possibly think that way? Yeah, you’re not alone.

I think stubbornness is one of the most natural human traits. We like certainty. We like familiarity. We like feeling grounded in what we know. Sometimes we become so focused on proving our point that we forget there may be another perspective equally shaped by truth, emotion, and experience.

Art, however, feels different.

Art does not argue back. It does not insist. It simply exists and quietly invites interpretation. That is what makes it beautiful.

My aunt, Romina Camilleri, created this painting and asked me what I saw when I looked at it.

Immediately, my mind drifted towards mountains viewed from above. I saw soft clouds rolling by and mountain peaks touched by sunlight. The gold flowing across the painting looked like sunlight catching the rough edges and curves of the landscape. What could be seen as dents, cracks, or imperfections suddenly became the very thing that made the scene beautiful. The unevenness gave it character. Depth. Awe.

To me, it felt peaceful and powerful at the same time. Like nature reminding us that beauty is rarely found in perfection.

Then she told me what she had actually envisioned.

The sea.

The gold, she explained, represented the hidden depths beneath the surface. The movement underneath the water. The mystery, life, hope, and richness that exists beyond what the eye immediately sees.

And suddenly, I saw that too.

What fascinated me most was not that one of us was right and the other was wrong. It was that both interpretations could exist honestly and naturally within the same piece. Two completely different visions formed from the same colours, textures, and strokes.

We didn’t get the chance to speak much more about it afterwards, but I found myself reflecting on it for quite some time.

That golden perspective stayed with me.

For me, the gold rested on mountaintops, highlighting the scars and ridges that make them magnificent. For her, the gold lived beneath the sea, hidden in the currents and depths carrying a life of their own.

And maybe people are a bit like that too.

Sometimes what we admire in someone is visible on the surface: their strength, confidence, achievements, or resilience. Other times, the real beauty lies underneath, in the quieter things we cannot immediately see — the battles they survived, the kindness they carry, the thoughts they never voice aloud.

Perspective changes everything.

The older I get, the more I realise that understanding another person is not always about agreeing with them. Sometimes it is simply about recognising that their view was shaped from standing in a different place.

And perhaps there is something comforting about that.

Maybe life is less about proving whose perspective is correct, and more about allowing ourselves to see the beauty in interpretations different from our own.

For now, though, this particular perspective is still waiting patiently to find a home on my walls.
