Beyond the Syllabus: Preparing BBA Digital Marketing Students for Campus Placements in the AI Era

For the last 16 years I have been running Technical Grooming Sessions for B.Tech students prior to Campus placement interviews. The one thing that has never changed on this journey is that students are hardly ever failing an interview, they are failing to use the knowledge they have, in a manner that is confident.

This year, I have a chance to work with the final year BBA Digital Marketing students and I found that the same applies here too. While academic knowledge is the focus of a four-year curriculum, employers are seeking something much wider: skills, analysis, business acumen, communication and ability to apply academic knowledge and concepts to actual problems in marketing.

This realization has guided my technical grooming technique ever since.

I don’t start with lectures, I start with a diagnostic assessment. Each student receives a comprehensive assessment covering three key areas: Digital Marketing Aptitude, Microsoft Excel, and AI Tool Usage. Such evaluations can pinpoint areas of strength, pinpoint skill gaps, and develop an individualized learning pathway rather than a standardized one.

The next aspect is entirely practical. Students will review key elements of SEO, Google Ads, Meta Ads, Google Analytics 4 (GA4), Social Media Marketing, Content Marketing, Email Marketing, Marketing Funnels, and Campaign Analytics, but always through the lens of industry. They learn about how these concepts are applied to address business problems rather than memorizing definitions.

In light of the swift progress of the field of Artificial Intelligence, AI literacy has become a must when it comes to grooming. Students practice using ChatGPT, Claude AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Canva AI, Looker Studio, Google Search Console, Google Analytics,Google Ad Dashboard, Facebook Ad Manager and Meta Business Suite to enhance productivity, research, content generation, data analysis, and marketing decision making. This is equally important as they learn when to trust AI output with human judgments.

Knowledge alone is not sufficient, however. Each session will feature real business case studies, hands-on assignments, mock technical interviews, speaking practice, resume reviews, optimization of LinkedIn profiles, as well as portfolio building and exercises. To enable students to clearly articulate their thinking, defend marketing choices, and show problem solving abilities in an interview.

The digital marketing space is changing more than fast. Today’s recruiters have come up with new profiles like AI Digital Marketing Executive, Performance Marketing Executive, SEO Executive, Digital Marketing Executive, Social Media Marketing Executive, Content Marketing Executive, Web Analytics Executive, Marketing Automation Executive, Growth Marketing Executive, CRM & Email Marketing Executive, and E-commerce Marketing Executive. The jobs require someone to be both impassioned and at ease with basic marketing and AI-driven processes.

I’m an educator and I feel our duty doesn’t stop at syllabus completion. Our job is to make students apply what they learn from school to the world of work. Technical grooming is more than just a revision exercise before going on placement; it’s the linkage between classroom learning and workplace readiness.

This is an AI-driven world, where the ability to work will increasingly rely on knowledge, adaptability, analysis, digital tools and ongoing learning. One of our greatest duties as teachers is to educate students for that future.
