Best Nearest Night View of Glittering Han River: Nightfall at Yongyangbongjeojeong Park & Nodeul Island

Discover a hidden hilltop observatory, a royal panorama, and the glowing heart of the Han River

While many tourists gather at the riverside parks, there is a hidden hill in Dongjak-gu in Seoul where you can witness a view once reserved for kings. Today, we explore Yongyangbongjeojeong Park, a historic pavilion with a million-dollar view, and the nearby cultural hub, Nodeul Island.

1. Yongyangbongjeojeong Park: Where History Meets the Horizon

The name is a mouthful, but its meaning is poetic: “A place where a dragon lifts its head and a phoenix flies.”

The Royal Rest Stop: Built in 1791, this was where King Jeongjo rested while crossing the Han River to visit his father’s tomb.

• The Modern Observatory: Just a short walk up from the historic pavilion is the Yongyangbongjeojeong Park. From here, you get an unobstructed, panoramic view of the Han River Bridge, 63 Square, and the distant Seoul N Tower. When the city lights turn on, the golden glow of the bridge reflecting on the water is truly royal.

2. Nodeul Island: The Floating Oasis

After taking in the high-altitude view, head down to Nodeul Island, an artificial island located right in the middle of the Hangang Bridge.

• The Vibe: It’s a complex cultural space filled with bookstores, cafes, and grassy fields.
• The “Moon” Installation: Don’t miss the giant artificial moon called “Dalbit Nodeul.” Seeing this glowing orb against the backdrop of the dark river and the shimmering Han River Bridge is a surreal experience. It’s the perfect place to sit on the grass and enjoy the cool river breeze.

3. Getting to Yongyangbongjeojeong Park (The Easy Way)

Since this spot is on a hill, knowing the right exit is key:

• Subway: Nodeul Station (Line 9, Exit 3).
• The Route: From Exit 3, walk straight for about 5 minutes until you see the historic wooden building (the original pavilion). From there, follow the signs up the wooden stairs to the Observatory (Park). It’s a 10-minute incline, but the reward at the top is worth every step.
• Coffe with Million-Dollar View in “Cafe The Hangang”: Right next to the Yongyangbongjeojeong Peace Park, you can find a hidden gem operated by the local district: ‘Cafe The Hangang’ (The Hangang Youth Cafe №1). The cafe features floor-to-ceiling glass windows, offering a panoramic view of the Han River from every single seat. It feels like a floating lounge above the city. I highly recommend visiting during sunset. Watching the river turn into liquid gold and seeing the city lights flicker on one by one while sipping a warm latte is a soul-soothing experience
• Pro Tip: After seeing the view, walk across the Han River Bridge (it has wide pedestrian paths) to reach Nodeul Island. The walk itself offers incredible photo opportunities.

4. Why This Duo is a Must-Visit

This course offers the perfect balance:

1. Perspective: You see the river from above (Yongyangbongjeojeong).
2. Immersion: You experience the river from the center (Nodeul Island). It’s quiet, romantic, and much less crowded than the Banpo or Yeouido areas.
