There’s a deeper question beneath the current debate between Anthropic and the Department of Defense about the use of AI — and it affects all of us.

We tend to think of AI as a tool.

But every tool shapes how we think.

That’s the real issue behind today’s debates about artificial intelligence, prompted by Anthropic’s refusals to let the Department of Defense violate the ethical guidelines in Claude. This disagreement is not just about what AI can do, but how it quietly influences the way we make decisions, solve problems, and see the world.

AI doesn’t replace human thinking.

It reflects it. Extends it. Structures it.

And in doing so, it makes certain kinds of thinking easier — and others harder.
