📊 1. Exam Pattern & The New Rules
Let’s get the absolute basics out of the way. You have 120 minutes to solve 95 questions. That means you get slightly more than 1 minute per question.
Part A (Technical)
80 Questions (80 Marks)
Marking scheme: +1 for correct, -1/3 for incorrect.
Part B (Aptitude)
15 Questions (20 Marks)

🚨 New pattern: Previously, ISRO selection was heavily based on the interview. Now, your final merit is 50% written test + 50% interview. The days of just aiming to clear the cut-off (usually around 60–65%) are over. ⚔️ 2. ISRO vs. GATE: what makes ISRO different from GATE
If you are coming from a GATE background, you have an edge, but you must completely change your execution strategy:
- No Virtual Calculators: If you have been preparing for GATE, this is the biggest habit you need to break. A common complaint post-exam is, “The paper was easy, I just ran out of time.” The truth? The time crunch happens because we are habitual calculator users. I made this mistake myself-I lost time double-checking basic arithmetic and even blanked on simple things like the value of the square root of 3. Under exam pressure, minor manual calculations often lead to silly errors. Start practicing your numericals strictly with pen and paper. It is the only way to uncover where your mental math lags and build the rock-solid speed you need to finish the paper.
- No Time for Derivations: In GATE, you have ample time to derive a forgotten formula and grab your marks. In ISRO, sitting down to derive a formula will cost you the exam. While you spend 3–4 minutes deriving and securing one mark, you just missed out on three other easy questions you could have gotten right.
- Zero Predictability: GATE has a fixed, reliable subject weightage. ISRO, on the other hand, is a complete wildcard. Let me give you some hard facts across branches:
- For Mechanical, Heat Transfer went from 0 marks to 2 mark in 2023 and then abruptly spiked to a massive 12 marks in 2025! Meanwhile, Engineering Maths dropped from 2–8 marks pre-2023 down to absolute zero.
- Think that’s crazy? In Electrical, they recently asked zero questions from massive core subjects like Signals & Systems or Analog & Digital Electronics.
- For CSE, it gets even wilder: roughly 24% of the core paper covers topics completely absent from the standard GATE syllabus. For instance, they casually dropped 4 questions just from Big Data & Cloud Computing!

- Do Not Skip Subjects: Because of this randomness, you must cover the entire syllabus. An easy 10-second theoretical question from your most hated subject carries the exact same weight as a 3-minute derivation from your favorite one.
- Memory is a Weapon: Direct theoretical questions are common. You need to memorize standard values and empirical formulas because you won’t have the time to derive them.

📝 The “Mistake Copy” Hack
Create a dedicated notebook. Every time you solve a Previous Year Question (PYQ) and forget a formula or a concept, write it down here. Read this notebook every single night before bed. 🛑 Beware the “Ego Trap”
The paper sets are jumbled. Question 1 might be the hardest, lengthiest numerical from your absolute favorite subject . Don’t let your ego say, “I am a pro at this, I must solve it.” If it takes more than 1 minute, skip it! Do not let one tough question eat 5 minutes of your time. This was one of my biggest mistakes. I saw a question, took it on my ego, and thought, “I have to do this, I know this, I literally solved this at home!” Don’t do this. If you are 100% sure you know how to solve it, BUT you also know it’s a long calculation, mark it and move on. Do it at the very end if time permits, or honestly, just solve it after reaching home. Do not let your ego ruin your paper.
⏱️ The 3-Phase Attempt Method
Never attempt the paper linearly from 1 to 95.
- Phase 1 (First 20–30 mins): Scan the entire paper. Solve ONLY the 10-second theoretical questions. Mark the OMR sheet immediately for these. This secures your base marks and skyrockets your confidence.
- Phase 2 (Next 60 mins): Come back to the numericals you know how to solve but require a bit of hand calculation.
- Phase 3 (Last 15–20 mins): Now fight the tough, lengthy anomaly questions. If you guess wrong here, you at least know you didn’t miss any easy questions.

Don’t blindly buy expensive test series right away. Your holy grail is ISRO PYQs, GATE 1-mark PYQs, and ESE (Engineering Services) objective questions.
