Voices in Conversation: Dating After 50 — Looking for Love … for Peace or Simply Looking for Someone Real?
Narghiza writes from the perspective of a woman navigating the strange landscape of modern dating later in life. Her observations are witty, exaggerated, and wonderfully sharp. Yet beneath the satire lies something deeply human. When one woman writes and another says, “I hear you,” a conversation begins.

Recently, Narghiza made me laugh out loud. Not once. Several times. Her article, The Cop, The Carpark, and The Catfish Test: Dating After 50, introduces readers to a world populated by suspicious “he-monks,” slammed doors, bikini-photo requests, emotional baggage, and enough comic frustration to make anyone reconsider downloading a dating app.I laughed.
But after the laughter faded, another question remained. What are people really looking for after 50?
Loneliness. Hope. Disappointment. The desire to connect. Many of us reach midlife carrying invisible luggage.
Some carry divorces. Some carry grief. Some carry betrayals. Some carry years devoted to raising children, building careers, caring for parents, or simply surviving difficult chapters of life.

By the time we arrive at fifty or sixty, we are no longer introducing ourselves as blank pages. We are entire libraries. Perhaps that is why dating after 50 often feels different from dating at 25.
At 25, people often ask: “Who might I become with this person?” At 55, they may ask: “Can I be myself with this person?” The questions become quieter. Less romantic perhaps. But more honest.
Narghiza’s “he-monk” metaphor made me smile because it captures something many women and men quietly recognize. Some people retreat after being hurt. Others build walls so high they mistake isolation for independence.
Some call it freedom. Others call it self-protection.

Yet even behind the strongest walls, there often remains a small hope that someone might still knock on the door. Not to rescue. Not to fix. Simply to understand.
Perhaps that is what many people are truly seeking. Not perfection. Not fantasy. Not endless excitement.
But companionship. Conversation. Shared laughter. A witness to the ordinary moments of life. The ability to sit across from someone and say: “This is who I am now.” And hear in return: “That is enough.”
Narghiza’s article reminds us that modern dating can be absurd. But it also reminds us that beneath the absurdity remains something timeless.
Human beings continue searching for connection. Not because they are incomplete. But because life becomes richer when it is shared.

So perhaps the question is not: “What does dating after 50 look like?” Perhaps the better question is: “What does companionship look like after experience has taught us both caution and courage?”
This conversation belongs to women. It belongs to men. And it belongs to all of us who continue believing that meaningful human connection remains possible at every stage of life.
Thank you, Narghiza, for making us laugh while inviting us to think. The best conversations often begin that way.
