Gardening Management #1x01: Preparing for Summer Heat with Mulch and Shade

A practical note on keeping soil stable, reducing weeds, and protecting plants through the rainy season and beyond.

A recent article reminded me that the best way to prepare for a heat wave is not only to water more, but to protect the soil itself. Mulching helps stabilize soil temperature, conserve moisture, and support the living microbes that keep plants healthy.

In my own garden, I have moved away from relying on ground planting alone. Instead, I now use a combination of black mulch sheeting, potted plant management, and shade cloth during the summer. This approach is especially useful in my yard, where the soil is rocky, roots remain in the ground, and weeds can easily return if I try to cultivate everything deeply.

Last year, I also learned that watering too often can do more harm than good. I used to water every morning and evening during hot seasons, and that actually caused many plants to decline. Now, during the rainy season, I usually do not water at all, and after the rainy season ends, I water only when the leaves or stems begin to droop or when the pot feels noticeably light.

For me, this is less about following a strict schedule and more about reading the condition of each plant. That shift has made summer management much more realistic and much less stressful.
