The Convenience Economy - Why Businesses That Save Customers Time Are Winning

Time is precious, and the businesses that revere customers’ time are now the winners.

Welcome to the convenience economy, where speed and ease now compete directly with price and brand loyalty for a customer’s decision. Customers have not stopped caring about cost. Research across 25 countries found that 74% of consumers switched brands in the past year, and 80% said value for money was the main reason.

But “value” no longer means “the cheapest.”

Separate research on shopper behavior in 2026 found that convenience (64%) and better prices (65%) are now running almost neck and neck as the top reasons people pick where to buy. A few years ago, convenience would have trailed price by a wide margin. Not now. That gap has nearly closed.

For a small business, this is good news. You cannot always win on price against a national chain. You can absolutely win on ease.

Why Does Saving Customers’ Time Matter So Much Right Now?

Harvard Business School researcher Ashley Whillans and colleagues have studied what they call time poverty: the feeling of having more to do than time to do it in. In an analysis covering over 2.5 million Americans, they found that the negative effect of feeling time poor on a person’s wellbeing was stronger than the negative effect of being unemployed. Around 80% of working Americans report feeling time poor, and that feeling is linked to misery at a level comparable to joblessness.

When a business removes friction, even something as small as making a booking in 30 seconds instead of five minutes, it is not providing a minor perk. It is relieving a documented source of psychological strain. That is why people remember the business that made things easy long after they forget what it charged.

Has the Way Customers Find Local Businesses Actually Changed?

It has changed, and the shift is large enough that ignoring it has a direct cost.

According to BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 97% of consumers read reviews online before choosing a business, and 41% now say they “always” read reviews, up sharply from 29% the year before.

The average consumer now checks six different review platforms, and while Google still leads, its usage share has dropped from 83% to 71% in a single year. In that same period, AI tools like ChatGPT jumped from 6% usage to 45% for finding local business recommendations.

If your business information only lives on Google, you are now missing nearly half of the people researching businesses like yours.

Does a Complete, Accurate Listing Actually Change Outcomes?

According to Google, a business with a complete profile is 2.7 times more likely to be considered reputable, 70% more likely to get a visit, and 50% more likely to get a purchase, compared with an incomplete or unverified one. That is Google’s own published guidance to businesses using their platform, not a third-party estimate.

73% of consumers say they lose trust in a business the moment they find incorrect information about it online. Consistent name, address, and phone number details across every directory a business appears on are directly tied to better local search rankings. A wrong phone number is not a small clerical error. It is a customer who tried to reach you, could not, and is now reading a competitor’s listing instead.

What About AI Assistants Like ChatGPT? Do Small Businesses Actually Need to Think About That Yet?

Yes, and the timeline for “yet” is shorter than most owners assume.

As mentioned earlier, BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found that the percentage of customers utilizing AI tools to find businesses surged from 6% in 2025 to 45%. Most of these users do not blindly trust the AI’s answer either. They still fact-check by checking sources and reading real reviews afterwards, which means your actual review content and listing accuracy are doing double duty, convincing both the AI and the human reading its answer.

Is Getting Recommended by AI Harder Than Ranking on Google?

Industry research found that achieving visibility in ChatGPT’s local recommendations is roughly 30 times harder than ranking in Google’s local search results, and less than half of the businesses that lead in Google’s local rankings also appear in AI recommendations. Being good at traditional local SEO no longer guarantees you show up when someone asks an AI assistant the same question.

Why Would a Business Not Show Up in AI Recommendations, Even If It Ranks Well on Google?

Consistency is the quiet culprit. Research found that only 68% of business contact information shown by ChatGPT and Perplexity actually matched the details on that business’s own Google Business Profile. AI tools pull from many sources across the web at once. If your hours, phone number, or address differ even slightly between your website, Google listing, and a directory site, the AI search tool may show outdated or simply wrong information, or skip recommending you because it cannot confirm which version is correct.

So, What Should a Small Business Owner Actually Do to Get Customers?

Here is where this stops being statistics and becomes a checklist.

  • Claim and fill out your Google Business Profile. Every field, not just the basics. Based on Google’s own published figures, this single action is tied to a 70% increase in visit likelihood and a 50% increase in purchase likelihood compared with an incomplete profile.
  • Audit your name, address, and phone number across every place your business appears online, including any directory listings, your website footer, and social media bios. They need to match exactly. This single fix addresses the trust problem that causes 73% of consumers to walk away.
  • Ask for reviews consistently, not in a single push. Recency matters as much as volume now. A handful of reviews from two years ago read as inactive to both customers and AI tools scanning for current information.
  • Respond to every review, good and bad. Consumers are notably more likely to use a business that responds to reviews than one that stays silent, and a thoughtful response to a negative review often does more for trust than five glowing ones.
  • Get listed and verified on more than just Google. With AI tools now sourcing answers from multiple platforms at once, a presence limited to one site is a gap that costs you visibility. Choose platforms that give you the space to showcase your business better to your potential customers.
  • Make the next step obvious everywhere your business appears. A click-to-call button, a booking link, or clear hours posted consistently removes the exact friction that pushes a time-pressed customer toward whoever is easiest to act on right now.
