Decoding Creativity: experimenting with SREF codes in Midjourney

Midjourney offers countless ways to shape your image prompts, but one of the more subtle and powerful techniques involves using SREF codes. These codes are essentially style reference shortcuts — unique identifiers you can add to your prompts to influence the final look and feel of your generated images. By incorporating an SREF code, you can nudge Midjourney’s AI model to draw upon specific artistic styles, aesthetics, or thematic elements, resulting in truly remarkable outcomes.
What are SREF codes in Midjourney?
In Midjourney, SREF stands for “Style REFerence.” Each code corresponds to a particular style, mood, or set of visual influences. Think of them as secret keys that unlock distinctive looks. When you include an SREF code in your prompt, Midjourney uses that reference to guide its interpretation, adding layers of complexity or thematic flair that might be hard to achieve with plain text descriptions alone.
By mixing multiple SREF codes, or experimenting with them in various combinations, you can discover unique aesthetics that feel both cohesive and fresh. These codes give you a powerful toolkit to tailor the AI’s output more precisely.
How to use SREF codes for amazing results
Identify your desired aesthetic: Before choosing an SREF code, think about the style you want. Are you looking for a vintage watercolor feel, a modern minimalist look, or a gritty cyberpunk vibe?
As example let take the prompt: “A sorceress conjuring mystical forces, swirling magical effects, intense facial expression, marvel comic style”

As you can see, Midjourney give a nice result, however the “Marvel” aesthetic I was looking for was not achieved. This result is more in line with the Marvel cinematic instead of the comics.
How to fix this, well your SREF codes to the rescue. I used the same pormpt and had experimented with some SREF codes and the examples below give a better Marvel comic aesthetic.

The last example gave me the aestetics I was looking for an create a real comicbook feel. Now I can use this SREF as base to create in this specific style.
How to add the SREF code to your prompt:
Simply append the SREF code at the end of your prompt. For example:
"[subject] --sref [code of the SREF]"
Example of mine:
“Some little fairy faes collecting water from dew drops on the leave of beautiful roses, background set in a tranquil forest scene with soft morning light --ar 4:3 --sref 1287455521”

Experiment with combinations: Don’t be afraid to try multiple SREF codes together. Just keep in mind that stacking too many can create conflicting influences, so start simple and add more complexity as you go.
Here’s an example of me with combination of two SREF codes:
“A sorceress conjuring mystical forces, swirling magical effects, intense facial expression, marvel comic style --ar 4:3 --sref 741792242 3465464387”

Original creation by Ivo ten Voorde using Midjourney using sref codes 741792242 and 3465464387
Adjust prompt details accordingly: The SREF code influences the style, but your base description still matters. If you want a moody, dramatic look, choose darker adjectives and atmospheric elements to complement the SREF code. So please ensure you describe what you like to create.
Example:
“Create a little fairy faes collecting water from dew drops on the leave of beautiful roses, background set in a tranquil forest scene with soft morning rain *--ar 4:3 `--`*sref 741792242 3465464387

Iterate and refine: AI art is a process. If the first result isn’t quite what you imagined, tweak either the prompt or the SREF code. With patience and experimentation, you’ll uncover spectacular results. Additional you can google and ask for examples or lists, where you can see SREF codes and examples.
Here are some SREF codes with prompts for you to try out:
Feel free to experiment with these prompts. You can swap out subjects, environments, or emotions to suit your vision:

Final thoughts
SREF codes are like creative shortcuts, allowing you to tap into distinct styles without painstakingly describing every detail. By skillfully pairing them with thoughtful prompts, you can unlock new visual possibilities and push your Midjourney creations to new heights. Embrace the process, explore these stylistic anchors, and watch your art evolve with every iteration.
