I spotted a red fox in our communal garden the other day, and it got me thinking. Yes, that happens occasionally. I wondered whether fox hunting still existed. So after my usual ten minutes of meticulous research, this is what I discovered.
According to Wikipedia:
Fox hunting is a sport involving the tracking, chasing, and, if caught, the killing of a fox, normally a red fox, by trained foxhounds or other scent hounds. A group of unarmed followers, led by a “master of foxhounds” (or “master of hounds”), follows the hounds on foot or on horseback.
Here is my take on that quote:
- Fox hunting is apparently a sport
- A sport that involves chasing a fox. One fox. A single fox
- A sport that involves the tracking, chasing, and, if caught, killing of a fox by specially trained dogs. Many dogs. A lot of dogs
- A large group of knuckleheads follows on foot or horseback. Many knuckleheads. Usually on horseback. Many horses
- I think I missed the part where the “sporting” reference applies
A Bizarre, barbaric, and brutal bloodsport that simply does not belong in the modern world, or any world, for that matter.
Whilst it was banned in England (where it originated in the 16th century), and Wales in 2005, and in Scotland in 2002, it is still legal in Northern Ireland, Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, and, surprisingly, the United States.
What are they fucking thinking?
Wikipedia goes on to state:
The sport is controversial, particularly in the United Kingdom. Proponents of fox hunting view it as an important part of rural culture and useful for reasons of conservation and pest control, while opponents argue it is cruel and unnecessary
Whatever the “proponents” might say, it seems to me that the “cruel and unnecessary” part is pretty damn accurate. Believe it or not, there are many other, more humane ways to cull animals besides having a pack of hounds rip them to pieces.
What do you think, folks?
Can anyone really justify this practice?
Does it have a place in our world?
You know what I think.
Thanks for reading this short rant and I look forward to your comments. Repost if you feel as strongly as I do. Love you all.
