“Taali” — The game Changer

I recently watched “Taali” — a beautiful series with a powerful message, graced by the ever-stunning Sushmita Sen. To not write a blog in support of her performance and the film’s cause would feel like a true injustice.

In recent years, the term “transgender” has gained increasing recognition, but it also continues to spark diverse understandings. The most common definition describes — “someone whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth”. But within distinct cultures, castes, and religions, unique perspectives on this identity may exist. These perspectives have evolved in recent years, but I still think, no single definition has been able to capture its real meaning.

No, no I am not doubting skills of topmost writers or literatures of the world. I just want to share how I perceive them. For me, transgender are “bold individuals who defy gender binaries and embrace the strength that comes from embracing diverse qualities”.

Imagine life as a cart with two wheels, one wheel representing men and other women. For a long time, the cart moved steadily, each wheel playing its role. But along the way, the desire for exploration and self-discovery started to stir, prompting adjustments in individual paths. And in this search, the cart got misbalanced. And now both of them are finding a middle point to balance the cart again. And I think this middle point is where transgenders are already residing.

Complicated? lemme explain

I think in this newly evolved world, women crave to have the strength, the ability to take their own, the confidence that they can be the protector, at least for themselves, and they can be bread earner for their family. Forget about lifting 100 kilos. Women just want the societal norm to acknowledge that they can lift weights too. We all know women are naturally caring and nurturing, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be tough and strong. Similarly, men aren’t asking for weakness. They simply want society to normalize their ability to express vulnerability without judgment.

Imagine a world where men could openly express their emotions without fear of judgment. Where tears weren’t seen as weakness, but as a natural human response. A world where cooking a meal wasn’t a chore reserved for women, but a skill anyone could embrace. And where the gym wasn’t divided into “pink dumbbells” and “iron paradise,” but a space for everyone to build strength and confidence.

Seems like a utopian dream? But Transgender are living this dream. They are not men or women, they are just individuals outside the confines of traditional gender categories. Individuals who don’t need permission to fight their own battles. Individuals who are not judged for being vulnerable. Individuals who take care of themselves on their own. They are the shining examples of the victories we’re all striving for. And guess what we are doing to these winners? Excluding them from spaces they deserve to share? Not giving them the right to work? Creating harmful stereotypes that portray them as ‘other’ instead of recognizing their shared humanity? If you think carefully, they are the future we all crave. They’re unique individuals, just like anyone else. Their experiences may differ, but we all share the same basic human needs and desires.

Imagine facing internal battles every day while navigating a world that often rejects you. Transgender individuals already carry immense emotional weight. Let’s not create more burdens for them on top of that. Let’s rip down the walls of expectation and offer open arms of acceptance. Let’s not stand idly by, waiting for change to trickle down — let’s be the tidal wave that washes away prejudice and discrimination
