A hard road with good lessons.

It was the first time he had ever slammed a door. He slammed it so hard it broke the wooden trim on the door frame.

Startled, I got up from the kitchen chair to see him walking into the kitchen as he had a thousand times before. But, this time was clearly different. His face had a grayish cast over it that seemed to obscure his features. His usual bright blue eyes looked dark.

My husband of 30 years was mild mannered and even tempered. Who was this angry stranger who had just stormed into our house?

I tried acting nonchalant as we were supposed to go to a friend’s fundraising function that night.

“I guess we should leave at around 6:00,” I offered in a friendly tone as if everything was fine. I couldn’t imagine what he could be this angry about.

Then, the dam burst.

He pulled out his phone as if it were a weapon. A few swipes and he held it up to show me a copy of the text I had sent to his new girlfriend.

“Did you send this to Elaine?,” he fumed.

For a split second, I was afraid he might hurt me.

It was clear I had texted her a cute photo of my husband and I at our lake house with a note that said, “I don’t know what Dirk has told you, but I want to keep this together.”

She didn’t respond to me but clearly did to Dirk.

In an insane imaginary world I had dreamed some kind of girl code would kick in to keep her away from my husband who had told her he had my permission to get involved with her.

I was ready to leave for the fundraiser at 6. “Let’s go.,” with more nonchalance.

“I’m not going.,” he slammed another door.

I went to the fundraiser alone. It was something I would have to get used to doing.

My ex-husband was checked out of the marriage long before this angry night. No magical girl code kept the girlfriend away. I was simply desperate to stay in a marriage where I was disrespected and ignored, but very comfortable.

With 20/20 hindsight I see the flaws in my plan. We can’t force someone to love us. We don’t want to be with someone who doesn’t want to be with us. Maybe I had a better plan all along that led me to the happy place I am now without my ex-husband.
