Natural Art – Jacek Tylicki was the first artist to let the nature paint.

Natural Art project, closely related to Conceptual Art and Land Art movements, has been initiated by Jacek Tylicki in 1973. Tylicki sends into the Nature - the wind, the rivers or the forests sheets of canvas or paper, and leaves them for a long while in a natural environment , thus forcing upon Nature an attitude previously reserved to the artist: the creation of forms.

It’s often called Natural art.

It can be considered as a continuation of abstract art movement. Vassily Kandinsky painted Untitled (First Abstract Watercolor), in 1913. It did not contain any straigt lines (geometrical forms), only free flowing natural colors. Than in the 50-ties of the XX-th century, Jackson Pollock created drip paintings, sometimes called action paintings, where he randomly dripped paint on canvases, directly from paint cans. It was just a step before Tylicki’s project where he let the nature create forms, tracks and colors, without any human interference.

Before Tylicki, again back in the 50-ties of the XX-th century, the great French artist Yves Klein attached a blue canvas to the roof of the car and drove collecting dust and dead insects to the blue canvas. It was close to Tylicki’s discovery, but not pure as he used the blue paint and a car to create it. Klein also dipped some paper sheets in a stream but added some color pigments up the stream. The papers were colored by them. Very close but nor pure Natural art yet. It had to wait until 1973 when the first pure Natural art piece were created in Sweden.

You can view it on Wikipedia. It’s called Nature No 1.

After No. 1 Tylicki traveled the world documenting and creating more of Nature pieces.
