Python is one of the most popular programming languages today, used for web development, data science, artificial intelligence, automation, and more. While many believe Python is “only for Linux or Mac,” Windows is a fully supported and excellent platform for Python development. However, installing Python on Windows requires attention to a few critical details — especially the system PATH and the difference between the Microsoft Store version and the official installer.

This 1000-word guide will walk you through every step, from downloading the correct installer to verifying your installation and writing your first script.

## Step 1: Check if Python is Already Installed

Before downloading anything, it’s wise to check if Python already exists on your system. Some Windows applications or development tools (like Visual Studio) may have installed it silently.

  1. Press Windows + R, type cmd, and press Enter to open the Command Prompt.
  2. In the black window, type the following and press Enter:
    python — version

    or

    py — version
  3. If Python is installed, you will see something like Python 3.11.4. If you see an error or a Microsoft Store pop-up, Python is not installed (or not in your PATH). Proceed to the next step.

Important note: Windows 10 and 11 sometimes come with a stub that redirects python to the Microsoft Store. This is confusing. We will bypass this by using the official installer.

## Step 2: Download the Official Python Installer

Do not use the Microsoft Store version unless you have a specific reason. The store version can have path restrictions and permission issues. The official installer from python.org gives you full control.

  1. Open your web browser and go to the official Python website: [https://www.python.org/downloads/](https://www.python.org/downloads/)
  2. The website automatically detects Windows and suggests the latest stable version. Click the yellow button that says ”Download Python 3.x.x” (e.g., Python 3.12.4 as of mid-2024).
  3. Alternatively, if you need a specific older version (say, for legacy projects), click the ”Windows” link under “Downloads” to see all available installers. Choose the ”Windows installer (64-bit)” for most modern PCs. If you have an older 32-bit system, choose the “Windows installer (32-bit)”.

Wait for the .exe file (roughly 25–30 MB) to finish downloading.
