Simplify, Simplify, Simplify!

There are a number of ways I’ve simplified my life these days.

It’s about being true to yourself really and figuring out what you REALLY want in life.

Some things you think are important at the time, turn out to not really matter much if it’s happiness, fulfillment and a simple life you’re after.

For example, I no longer jump on planes to go speak on stage at some event on the other side of the world, (or even the other side of the country).

Nope, these days I turn down those invites and it’d have to be something pretty special to prise me away from this little island to do a speaking gig.

I no longer drive a fancy Mercedes sports with electric roof etc. Means I don’t have to worry about some bugger scratching it anymore. Wouldn’t last 5 minutes on the island anyway. Not if I wanted to get to some of the even more secluded beaches.

These days I drive a 20 year old, Honda CRV called ‘Betsie’. She’s a bit beaten up in places, but we love her and she does her job nicely for us.

I don’t own that nice classic wooden (iroko on teak if you’re interested in that sort of thing) yacht anymore either. Although she was gorgeous, I sold her years ago.

Dunno what I was even thinking buying a bloody boat for in the first place. I’ve had a few boats in my time, mainly thought I’d go sea fishing on them and I did, but just got as sick as a dog. (I get sea sick just looking at a glass of water, so it was bloody madness really).

Plus I no longer have the expensive job of hauling her out and varnishing her hull, AND the mooring fees and other costly shit that goes with being a boat owner.

The thing that really helped simplify my day to day life the most though, was the decision to plan my escape route from flying a desk for a living.

I did that (flying a desk) for a blue chip company, then for another company where I built their sales to the point where they were able to sell their business and walk away with a million or so each.

Then I started and built my own recruitment company from scratch. Very lucrative, hence the Mercedes and the yacht, flash house near the woods etc. All the trappings of success, but I was bloody miserable, stressed, exhausted and it nearly killed me.

Leaving all that shit behind and making a determined effort to finally seek out the simple life, is what turned my whole life around. Wish I’d done it sooner, that’s for sure.

As I said earlier, some things you think are important at the time, turn out to not really matter much if it’s happiness, fulfillment and a simple life you’re after.
