Vijay Becomes Tamil Nadu Chief Minister: New Political Era Begins

The Tamil Nadu Politics is now a new historic era. Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay popularly known as Vijay, officially assumed the role of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu today. This turnaround is one of the largest political tides in decades, eroding the powerful hold of the DMK and AIADMK and ushering in a new political era.

Vijay had a huge fan base, and was one of the most prominent celebrities in Tamil films for many years. It’s never easy to convert popularity into political power, though. Numerous celebrities have tried politics, but only a few have succeeded in gaining political credibility. The achievements of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) show that this was not a celebrity stunt, but a well crafted political movement.

TVK became a big player in the 2026 Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu with the necessary votes to achieve majority and form the government. The party is reportedly supported by almost 120 MLAs as a result of this alliance support and independent ones, enabling Vijay to officially claim power. This was an important event as Tamilnadu had been politically ruled by these two parties for a long time. Vijay’s win broke the trend.

The formation of Government was a process of intense political negotiations, discussions about political alliances and formal meeting with the Governor. TVK’s efforts to achieve the majority were also aided by the party support it received from Congress, CPI, CPI(M) and VCK. After the confirmation of numbers, the Governor invited Vijay to form a government, thus paving the way for the swearing-in ceremony.

The swearing-in event in Chennai was attended by a huge number of people from both the political and entertainment circles. Thousands of supporters flocked to see the event; senior political leaders and film personalities were present. The air was more than a political victory, it was a symbolic change in the state. Vijay along with the members of his new cabinet took the oath and started the first TVK-led Government in Tamil Nadu.

When Chief Minister Vijay made his maiden speech as Minister, he termed it as “a new era of secular and social justice.” The crux of his political campaign is highlighted in this line. Vijay’s whole political journey was defined by his image as a change- maker who could disrupt the status quo, instil transparency and accountability and symbolise a new generation of voters who wanted new leadership.

His trajectory is more than a path to fame in cinema. It is also a response to the public discontent with the traditional political systems. A number of voters, particularly the youth, were eager to see a change from the conventional ‘DMK-AIADMK’ politics that has been in the making in Tamil Nadu for years now. Vijay accomplished just that with his call for change and brought it to the political level.

Winning the power, however, is only the first step.

Now’s the true test. Making public support and powerful speeches the only means of governance is an inadequate approach for Tamil Nadu. State has serious unemployment, education reform, industrial growth, delivery of welfare, healthcare, and infrastructure issues. The expectations are very high among the public as Vijay had promised the people of the country transformation.

Now people will be paying attention to his first decisions. His selection of cabinet members, administration focus and first 100 days of office will determine the credibility of his leadership in the eyes of the public. Supporters hope that there will be transparency, good governance and action seen in reform. Critics, however, doubt the ability of political charisma to be translated into administrative effectiveness.

This will be the place where he will be judged by history.

Tamil Nadu is one of the state with maximum awareness and political demands in India. While symbolic victories are important, performance is more important. Those who voted for change will want to see the results now, not just the rhetoric. Now, TVK has to prove itself to be not just a movement based on popular Vijay but a stable political party that can provide long-term governance.

This political change carries a bigger message of Indian democracy as well. The nation’s voters are more likely to question the traditional political system when they feel disempowered by it. New leaders are being challenged and existing structures are being “tested.” Vijay’s win is a part of this national phenomenon.

One thing is for sure for now: Politics in Tamil Nadu has changed historically.

The actor who was known to millions as “Thalapathy” is no longer just a movie star or a campaigner. Now the chief minister of one of the most powerful states in India.

He can rejoice in his triumph today, in the headlines.

However, what he does with it will be remembered in the future.
