For months now, it’s seemed like every new “gaming” keyboard needed magnets. Hall-Effect switches. Rapid Trigger. Adjustable actuation. The whole arms race. From all that rushing down the mountain, it started to seem like classic mechanical keyboards were being buried along the way.
Until the Keychron Q1 Ultra 8K arrived to disrupt all that peacefully.
The Keychron Q1 Ultra is a top-dollar, full-metal 75% keyboard built around old-school mechanical switches. But throw in that 8K polling rate and ultra low-latency — and it’s clear this board is here to make the statement that you can still be a high-end mechanical and genuinely game.
But does an old-school styleboard really have what it takes to take on the magnetic newcomers?

Build Quality
Fixed typing angle seems a feature of premium boards
The Q1 Ultra 8K is exactly what you expect from the Q-series. Heavy. Dense. Overbuilt. The CNC aluminum case makes the keyboard feel like a solid brick on the desk. It weighs around 1.7 kg, so once you place it somewhere, it’s not moving.
This is not a portable board. It’s the kind of keyboard you buy because you want something that feels permanent on your desk.
Cosmic back plate
Internally, you get:
- double gasket mounting
- multiple foam layers
- hot-swap PCB
- plate designed for acoustic tuning
Everything about it feels as if you just touched an enthusiast keyboard, not a gaming device. That tells a lot about its build quality. And it is a very pretty one too, just look at the cosmic back plate with the golden glimmer. Even the fixed typing angle and the lack of kick-out fee seem more premium than having those features
Premium and pretty — if I were to summarize it in one sentence.
Sound Test Video (click)
This is where the Q1 Ultra feels very “Keychron”. Thanks to the metal body and internal foam, the board produces a deep, controlled “thock” rather than a hollow sound.
The KSA keycaps also play a role here. They are thicker and taller than typical Cherry profile caps, which gives keystrokes a slightly fuller sound signature.
Overall sound profile:
- deeper than typical gaming keyboards
- controlled
- quite pleasant for long typing sessions
- If you like the tactile feedback (my Banana switches are tactile), you will love it
However, since the keycaps are KSA, it may take a while and quite many typos to get used to them. I am not a fan of them after testing for quite a long time. More on that below.
Keycaps & Switches
Left cluster
Keychron ships the Q1 Ultra 8K with KSA profile double-shot PBT keycaps. These are thicker than the typical caps you see on gaming keyboards and noticeably taller than Cherry or OEM profiles. The sculpt is quite pronounced, which gives the board a slightly more “enthusiast” typing experience rather than the flat, low-profile feel many gaming boards aim for. The quality of these KSA keycaps is also quite premium — solid look, texture that is a bit grippy, thick, well-printed lettering. But as usual, they do develop some shine after a while.
Because of the height and thickness, the keycaps also influence the acoustics. Keystrokes sound a bit deeper and fuller, especially on a gasket-mounted board like this one. If you’re used to Cherry profile caps, the KSA profile may feel a bit tall at first, but after some time, it becomes quite comfortable for both typing and gaming. But it will take some time to adjust — I still can’t feel fully comfortable with them due to the pronounced sculpt. But as usual, your experience may differ.
Right cluster and the volume knob
Right under the caps, you’ll find Keychron Silk POM switches. These are factory pre-lubed mechanical switches designed to be smoother than typical stock switches straight out of the box. The Q1 Ultra 8K is available with three variants:
- Red (linear) — smooth, light, and quiet
- Brown (tactile) — a mild bump for general typing
- Banana (tactile) — stronger tactile bump and earlier actuation
The Banana switches are arguably the most interesting option here. They provide a more pronounced tactile event than standard Browns, which gives the keyboard a slightly more responsive feel during both typing and gaming. In general, I am a fan of tactility in switches, and this is no exception.
KSA keycaps and Banana Silk POM tactile switches
The PCB itself is hot-swappable, meaning you can replace the switches without soldering. Any standard MX-style mechanical switch will work, which opens the door for enthusiasts who want to experiment with different switch types, spring weights, or sound profiles.
Overall, the combination of thick PBT caps and smooth factory-lubed switches gives the Q1 Ultra 8K a very polished feel straight out of the box, even before any modifications. However, I’ve noticed some substantial switch wobbles that you can observe even when the switches are on. Not a game-changer, but I have to report this to you.
Gaming Performance

Now the interesting part.
The Q1 Ultra 8K pushes an 8000 Hz polling rate, meaning the keyboard reports input 8,000 times per second. In theory, that means:
- extremely low latency
- faster input reporting
- better responsiveness in competitive games
In practice? The difference between 1K and 8K polling is extremely hard to feel for most players. But there are still benefits.
The board feels instant. No wireless lag. No delay in fast inputs. No weird buffering.
For FPS games, the keyboard behaves exactly how you want: predictable and responsive. And we’re talking about a mechanical keyboard, not a magnetic one, which is worth-remembering.
And the most impressive part? You can get that performance wirelessly (also in 8k excluding Bluetooth). The difference in latency is almost unnoticeable, definitely not something the average gamer would notice. Due to the nature of the tactile mechanical switches, the latency must be a bit higher than a magnetic switch set to the lowest possible settings, but I didn't find that to be a problem in competitive gaming. I know this might sound shocking, but the only real advantage of the magnetic keyboards is Rapid Trigger (you won’t find it in mechanical keyboards) and the Actuation Point that you can freely customize. SOCD? This keyboard has it! It’s probably the second brand, after Nuphy, that achieved it in a mechanical keyboard. Impressive.
And when it comes to being wireless, there’s an interesting thing about the software. Read on.
Software

Keychron web-based Launcher
This software is ZMK, not the regular QMK. Why and what are the differences?
QMK vs ZMK can basically be summarized as old vs new. QMK is the veteran, full-featured ecosystem originally designed around wired keyboards. The advantages of using QMK are that it is battle-tested and stable, with tons of features like advanced macros, layers, and full VIA support right out of the box. This makes QMK great if you want tons of flexibility when configuring your keyboard (especially if you plan on gaming wired).
ZMK is Keychron’s attempt at introducing a more modern firmware designed specifically with wireless in mind. It has native Bluetooth support, greatly increased power efficiency, and correct battery handling that can result in drastically increased battery life. However, it currently has a bit of a developer-heavy workflow and is missing some of QMK’s more esoteric features. As such, while you’re much more likely to see ZMK on newer boards, for the time being, QMK is the easy winner for flexibility and user-friendliness, while ZMK is the clear winner for anything wireless. This is precisely why Keychron is moving its newer “Ultra” line of boards to ZMK by default.
So, Keychron uses its own Keychron Launcher, which is a web-based configuration tool rather than a traditional desktop application.
Instead of installing software, you open the launcher in your browser, connect the keyboard via USB, and the board is detected directly in the interface (as long as you have a supported browser like Chrome, Edge, or Opera). The entire configuration process happens in the browser, so it works on Windows, macOS, and Linux without requiring separate downloads.
The interface itself is fairly straightforward. You get a visual layout of the keyboard and can click on any key to change its behavior.
With Launcher, you can:
- Remap any key
- Create custom macros
- Assign media or system functions
- Configure multiple layers
- Adjust RGB lighting effects
- Update the keyboard firmware directly from the browser
- change the polling rate
- Customize debounce time
- set SOCD on a mechanical keyboard (sic!)
Key remapping is particularly simple. You just select a key on the virtual keyboard and assign a new function from categories like basic keys, media controls, macros, lighting commands, or custom functions.
The software also supports layer-based layouts, meaning each key can behave differently depending on the active layer. This allows advanced setups where one key can trigger a different action when tapped, held, or used together with another layer key. Of course, you can customize all RGB to your liking (which also works via keyboard shortcuts).
In practice, the software feels simple but powerful. It’s not overloaded with menus, yet it still gives enough control for most enthusiasts who want to tweak key layouts, macros, or lighting profiles.
Overall, it’s a clean solution — especially if you prefer lightweight, browser-based tools instead of bulky peripheral software suites.
Mind you, the default debounce time of 50ms seems way too much for a keyboard that should also be used for gaming, so try testing different values in the software. In my case, setting it all to the lowest possible values resulted in great responsiveness and no noticeable lag.
Also, updating the software may seem weird — you need to press this button under the spacebar (seen in my Unboxing video), which I find troublesome and not straightforward. But you need to do it only one time, the first time.
Battery Life
Battery life is honestly ridiculous. The keyboard uses a 4000 mAh battery, which Keychron claims can last up to 660 hours with RGB disabled.
That’s months of usage. Even with wireless 8K polling. For a performance-focused keyboard, that’s impressive. With RGB on, it goes down to 110 hrs, which is still good (tested).
Verdict
Very solid spacebar, with silicon paddings added
The Keychron Q1 Ultra 8K is an interesting keyboard. It doesn’t try to beat magnetic keyboards at their own game.
Instead, it asks a different question:
What if you kept the sound, build quality, and feel of a traditional mechanical keyboard, but gave it modern gaming performance?
The result is a board that feels like an enthusiast keyboard first, and a gaming keyboard second. No need to lube anything, no modding required.
And honestly… that might be exactly what many people want. This keyboard stands the gaming test — even without the Rapid Trigger capabilities. But it has SOCD, something still very rare in mechanical keyboards, good default switches, and very good software. It’s fast and reliable, it’s responsive and snappy.
I wish the switches didn’t have wobble (not a big deal in everyday use), though. In my opinion, they should also choose perhaps PC transparent keycaps for this premium keyboard? The problem of keycap shine would be non-existent then.
