When You Can’t Tell If You’re Avoiding Life or Protecting Your Peace

Have you ever sat there trying to make a simple decision? Go somewhere, show up, do the thing, and suddenly it feels like your entire life is being evaluated through that one choice?
It’s like trying to hear your own thoughts in a room where everyone is talking at once, and you’re trying to focus to hear your voice, thinking, “Do I even know what my own voice sounds like anymore?” Maybe it’s just me…or maybe you’ve felt this too, but the older I get, the more complicated even the smallest decisions seem.
I’ve been realizing that I need to find a way to quiet those voices, even the ones that come from within me. I always tell my kids, ‘When in doubt, come back to your heart.’ Our minds can get loud, tangled in fear and overthinking, but our hearts tend to speak more quietly and more honestly.
Lately, I’ve been asking myself a question I don’t always know how to answer…“Am I avoiding something I need to face, or am I finally learning how to protect my peace?”
And maybe the hardest part is that sometimes it’s both. Maybe sometimes we are avoiding something uncomfortable, and sometimes we’re finally learning that not everything deserves our energy.
The more I sit with this question, the more I realize I might be avoiding the answer. It’s not always easy to tell yourself the truth and decide what’s right for you. Maybe it’s not answering the message right away. Or not going to something you said yes to before you really checked in with yourself. Or sitting in the quiet instead of filling every moment just to feel productive.
After all, some decisions don’t only affect you; they can have a butterfly effect and change others’ lives as well. Not in a bad way, but sometimes, not in a way that the other person wants either.
We’re so used to thinking that doing more means we’re doing better. But maybe learning to pause, to question, to choose differently, maybe that is its own kind of growth.
We are living this life right now — our life. And maybe it’s not about choosing perfectly. Maybe it’s about choosing what’s in your heart and trusting that even if you get it wrong sometimes, you’re still learning how to listen to yourself in a world that’s always trying to speak over you.
So today, whatever decision you’ve been putting off, big or small, listen to your heart, and I hope you choose what feels right for you. I know there are decisions I still need to make, and I hope I’ll be brave enough to truly listen to mine, because I’m ready to move forward.
A friend once said to me that not deciding is a decision; you’re choosing to stay exactly where you are. That thought really stayed with me. And I can’t help but wonder what adventures might be waiting on the other side of finally choosing.
Maybe the moment we choose is the moment life finally leans in to meet us. And maybe every brave decision opens a door we didn’t even know we were allowed to walk through.
