Uh-boo-hoo, a fancy career in architecture wasn’t waiting for me in San Francisco when I landed from India. There was no sleek studio nestled on the top floor of a glass and concrete box, overlooking Golden Gate bridge on one side and Bay bridge on the other.
Rather grimly, it was launched in someone’s condominium on 22nd Street, on the first floor office, perched on a 60 degree incline street where I could read “STOP” on the asphalt at the top of the street like a life and death warrant, doing construction documents for additions and remodels for affluent bay area residences (the thrill lasted a few months until I found an appropriate “relaunch”).
But the real education came every time I parked my car — holding my breath, stomping the brake with all my might, praying I wouldn’t roll backward on the sloping street, and flooring the accelerator in a single motion to get past that STOP sign.

Every conversation, every form, every typology, every movement, almost everything felt like a rule where the floor was made of lava, or even worse, wobbly jelly. Immigrant me had to learn fast to scan the landscape, understand the terrain, anticipate surprises and adapt on the fly. That constant scanning became it’s own lesson, the skills that made me a better architect, curious to learn and understand everything from the tiny speck of soil below the foundations to the blue sky above before even drawing the first line on design.

Geomorphology is a dry academic term, close to geotechnical, professors wearing tweed with elbow patches lecturing about it, and you scouring up an assignment to wrap up the coursework after missing all classes that semester. But ignore studying the soil beneath your building, and that earth moves, you end up with cautionary takes like San Francisco’s Millennium Tower or row houses of Lehi, Utah.
San Francisco’s Millennium Tower: Luxury Meets Gravity
I don’t know who sang “Lean on me” to the Millennium Tower, but the 58 stories of glass and marble glamour started leaning, dramatically, border lining on tilting! While engineers and architects called it “unexpectingly interesting”, residents were terrified! The culprit? Reclaimed land, sandy soils, and landfill that apparently had other ideas. Even the most sophisticated engineering couldn’t charm it into compliance.
Lesson learned: if you don’t stabilize the soil, penthouse doesn’t stand tall!
Lehi, Utah: Clay Soils That Moonlight as Drama Queens
Then there’s Lehi, Utah.
As if suburbia wasn’t enough to sink the dreams, the clay-rich soils led to unstable grounds, foundation cracks, bowing walls, and no Annabelles were needed to scare the residents as clay soil expanded — shrunk on it’s own schedule!
Designing With the Ground, Not Against It
Know your soil. Slopes, sediment, groundwater Love your foundation. Piles, mats, reinforcements Respect natural flow. Drainage, landscaping, grading, follow the contours Expect drama. Floods, swelling clay, earthquakes
Why Geomorphology Matters
Architecture is beyond aesthetics or engineering — it’s a negotiation with forces you cannot control. Hire the right professionals, and respect their knowledge and findings, and find solutions accordingly for your site.
Let the building design only thing on architect’s table, no lawsuits!
