How I Discovered My Passion for Sports Media

If you had asked me a few months ago what I wanted to do with my life, I probably wouldn’t have had an answer. Unlike a lot of people my age, I was trying to figure out what I enjoy and what I could see myself doing everyday for the rest of my life as a career. What I did know was that sports have been a big part of my life since I was young, and I love media.

Up until a couple years ago, I was never the person who keeps up with games, checks scores, follows sports news, and talks about what’s happening in the sports world. But recently, I realized that I’m not just interested in watching sports, I’m interested in the stories surrounding them. I love hearing athletes talk about their journeys, learning about team dynamics, and seeing how reporters brought those stories to life.

Lately I’ve been paying attention to sports media, and the more I do that, the more I imagine what it might be like to be the one asking the questions, writing the articles, or creating content that fans can connect with. I’ve started to realize that sports media combines so many things I enjoy: writing, storytelling, creativity, and obviously, sports.

What really made me see this as a career was understanding that sports are about so much more than wins and losses. Behind every game is a story. There are athletes overcoming challenges, teams building chemistry, and moments that bring communities together. Being able to tell those stories and help people connect with them is something that excites me.

As I prepare to enter my last year of high school, I’m excited to learn more about about the field and gain experience doing what I love in my yearbook class. I know there will be challenges, and I know I still have a lot to learn, but that’s apart of the journey. Every photo, every article, and every opportunity will help me grow into the journalist I hope to become.

Discovering my passion for sports media wasn’t just one big moment. It has happened gradually as I pay attention to what excites me and makes me happy, what I spend my free time doing, and what I can see myself being extremely passionate about for many years to come. I can now confidently say that sports media is where I belong.
